A description of the rear axle assembly of the International truck Is given herewith: here-with: The International rear axis combines .i f t).. elioft rtrlvA with the advantages of the shatt drive witn the strength of the chain-driven type. It is of the latest approved internal gear tvpe, consisting of two members. All driving mechanism is Inclosed, affording cleanliness, effloient lubrication and a quietly operated mechanism. As in the chain-driven type, a dead axle carries the load while a shaft-drive type live axle transmits the power. The dead axle or -weight-carrying member is a round, one-piece drop forging, shaped toward the center so as to provide a substantial point of attachment for the live axle. A round drop forging Is used because this construction best withstands the combination of torsional and bending strains to which an axle Is subject. The rear wheel and differential bearings are the same size, making them Interchangeable. Interchange-able. The live or driving axle Is located In front of the weight-carrying member. This construction shortens the propeller shaft, which is a decided advantage. The brakes are both of the internal expanding type, located side by side on the rear axle and protected from dust and dirt by the large brake drum on the rear wheel. They are self-adjusting to allow for wear on the fiber lining. There is no necessity for removing the wheels to adjust the brakes. The bolts on the rear axle are provided with locking devices, which eliminate the danger of loosened nuts and bolts. The nuts on the differential are locked by means of a steel wire. |
