I wish to ask some questions of you In regard to dry farming, as the Inter-Mountain Farmer Is pert answering them, for which I am very sorry, as this part of the country Is sadly in need of a farm Journal. I have a lot of Al No. 1 bench land that lies up against the steep mountain side, west slope, and Is naturally moistened to a greater or less degree by the mountains, . and it has never been cultivated, but I am having- It ploughed up at present and I wish to raise a crop of wheat, rye or barley this season. Do you think It can be done? and what would be tho best variety to raise? Would the Diamond Dia-mond Spring wheat that woa grown by Irrigation at Granger do? or would the Idaho White wheat that Is grown In Cache valley by Irrigation be better? or would both be failures? Could J sow rye and get a crop this season, or would it not mature until the year following7 fol-lowing7 Wild sunflowers grow In abundance, and where there Is a squirrel squir-rel hole to stir the soil they grow six to eight feet high, and it looks to me as though I might get a pood crop o grain if I only could get the right kind of seed. Hoping that you will glvo mo some advice In regard to what to sow, I remain, your3 very truly. Subscriber. ANSWER. 1. You should select the seed for your arid farm from wheat which haa bet-n grown during the past several years without Irrigation. Plants, like animals, ani-mals, adapt themselves to their environments. envi-ronments. Plants growing without Irrigation Ir-rigation for some seasons gradually develop de-velop longer root stems and drought resistant qualities, which fact ought to be taken advantage of by the arid farmer. The experience of arid farmers farm-ers in this section for many years Justifies Jus-tifies the statement that for the cereal crops fall seeding should be practiced. The land which is being ploughed at this time should be left fallow during the summer and It should be thoroughly thorough-ly cultivated at frequent Intervals. After a heavy rainfall the ground should be gone over thoroughly with a smoothing harrow; or, In case the soli Is extremely firm, a disc harrow should be used. An earth mulch, three or four Inches thick, should be kept over the surface of the soil. 2. I would advise seeding rye in the fall, but wheat would be a more profitable prof-itable crop seeded at the same time. The State Is at present maintaining six experimental arid farms, on which a great many varieties of wheat are be-, ing grown. Any of these wheats will be available for distribution during the coming fall and it will be advisable for you to keep in close touch with the experiment ex-periment station at Logan, in order to procure seeds from the most successful success-ful varieties.
