Show EZRA THOMPSON BUYS BLOODED RAGE HORSE Not for many moons has there been such excitement in local horse circles as there was yesterday when ex-Mayor Ezra Thompson drove into McCoy's stables with a handsomo chestmit stallion stal-lion with a mark of 2.0Si, which he had Imported from Los Angeles. In less than an hour the news had been noised about that there was a new horse in town and horsemen thronged the stables all day long, anxious to get a look at the speedy anlmal.x Robert I, Is the name of the newcomer new-comer and his pedigree reads something some-thing like this: "Robert i., (2:0S4) ch. h., by Hamble-lonlan Hamble-lonlan Wilkes-Anna Belle (2:27) by Dawn (2:1SJ). Record made at Decatur. Deca-tur. III., August IS, 1901." The ?lallion stands about 15.3 hands high and weighs 1100 pounds. In Robert I. was one of the greatest money-making pacers in the State of California, where he made a mark of 2:10. He raced In the East, taking his present mark of 2:0S at Decatur, 111., there being fifteen contesting horses, he winning- in three straight heats of 2.111.4, 2:0S and 2:10. Jate in the fall he was reshlpped to Los Angeles, where Mr. Thompson purchased him from R. B. Moorehead for $3500, the highest price ever paid for a horse for Salt Lake City. The Mayor has always been a lover of the game and has Indulged his taste by owning and racing such horses at Ivas M (2:19V) In Idaho, Montana, Mon-tana, Colorado and Utah; Rimac by Robert McGregor, who Is the sire of Creasus. Hp also raced through the inter-mountain circuit Vesta C, (2:17), in 1902, clearing up everything at Cal-der's Cal-der's park. Blue Note (2:22V,) and Frank N. (2:27) were others of his string. Next week he will start training train-ing at Calder's, having the new horse, Robert I., June Wilkes (2:24) and a colt by Rlmac dam Ivas. A new man, John Butterwood, who accompanied the horses en route here, will remain permanently In the Mayor's employ and take charge of his entire stable. The cornered match race muchly talked of between June Wilkes, owner, Ezra Thompson; Cold Storage, owner, Tom McCoy; Alfonso, owner, Mr. Clayton; Clay-ton; Crabapple, owner, Mr. Crabtree; Jimmle R., owner, Mr. Nash, and Angle Duryea, owner, Dr. Humelbaugh, looks like a go. Each arc to put up $100 and the day preceding the race another 5100 Is to be posted by all remaining In the race, which will take place on May 30th at Calder's. winner to take all. Some of the backers of these horses are dead game in the betting ring and it will prove an interesting race. All the horsemen are at fever heat waiting for nice weather that they may begin training and with the number of new ones here added to last year's crop there should be racing sufficient to please all lovers of tills sport. Dr. G. W. Shores is expected back from San Francisco this coming wpek with a fast one has stepped a half in one minute fiat so look out for the doctor. |
