This Is one of a sorb of "Literary Lives," Intended to furnish biographical and critical studies of well-known authors au-thors of all countries. Eight of the scries havo now been Issued, Jn uniform style and with Illustrations and portraits. This life of Newman necessarily is devoted de-voted to a considerable extent to the 5rcat Tractarlan movement, which shook off the torpor which had fallen In the middle of the Eighteenth century upon the groat English seats of learning. Nowman, "a religious genius." was born Into the spiritual spirit-ual life which the great revival awakened, and he played a mighty part In tho religious reli-gious ferment which ho found In motion. Tho biographer dwells much, and rightly, on tho events of that great mpvement, and on Newman's part in thorn. For Newman ho has the highest admiration, which was fully Justified In tho intellectual force, the dep piety, and tho wonderful Influence Newman exercised upon the thought and the religious standards of his time. His greatness Is now recognized hy all; ids goodness Is generally known. Yet ho was haled with a bitter hate In England for deserting tho Angllc:ui church and going over to Roman Catholicity. This work largely explains hl action In this, and is on the whole a broad-minded, admirable appreciation of tho great English Cardinal. |
