Show Utah Opera Company To Present Carmen' "Bringing the arts together" is the Utah Opera Company's motto and its May production of "Carmen" will utilize a broad spectrum of the performing arts. "Carmen" "Car-men" will be presented May 16, 19, 21 and 24 at 8 p.m. in the Capitol Theatre. ADRIENNE Leonetti, a mezzo-soprano from Los Angeles, An-geles, will sing the title role of Carmen. Directing the production pro-duction will be University of Utah drama professor, H.E.D. Redford. Ballet. West's recently retired direc-' tor, William F. Christensen, will choreograph the dance scenes which will use local dancers. Members of the Utah Symphony will comprise the orchestra for the production. Replacing Maurice Abravanel, who was originally scheduled to conduct con-duct "Carmen" will be W. Anthony Waters, musical assistant as-sistant to general director Kurt Adler of the San Francisco Fran-cisco Opera. ADRIENNE Leonetti has received the highest accolades ac-colades for her portrayal of Carmen in previous produc- tions. After winning the San Francisco Opera auditions in 1971, she went on to establish her career, singing with such distinguished opera companies com-panies as Seattle, Honolulu, San Francisco, Portland and San Diego. The mezzo boasts over 35 operatic roles in her repertoire reper-toire with Carmen and Amneris among her most popular. ' SINGING THE role of Don ir-se in this production will be the company's general director, direc-tor, Glade Peterson. His " American debut in the role was in 1958 under the direction direc-tion of Sarah Caldwell at the Opera Company of Boston. Escamillo will be sung by Clayne Robison and Don Becker. Micaela will feature Laura Beecroft and Jean-marie Jean-marie Bagley. The remaining roles are double cast as follows: Zuniga - John EnloeWilliam Goeglein; Morales - Martin Wright-Terry Wright-Terry Summerhays; Frasquita - Elaine Brews-terSusan Brews-terSusan Alexander; Mercedes Mer-cedes - Mary Jane PalmLaura Garff; El Dan-cairo Dan-cairo - Noel Twitchell; and El Remendado - Dave ArnoldAlan Arn-oldAlan Edwards. One of the favorites in the operatic repertoire, Bizet's "Carmen" has delighted audiences since its Paris premier in 1875. From the 1 Habanera and Sequidilla to the Gypsy Song and Toreador Song, ."Carmen" is full of memorable melodies, all as passionate and dramatic as the tale they are portraying. The Utah Opera Company will sing "Carmen" in its original language, French. TICKETS FOR "Carmen" are now available at the Capitol Theatre box office, 50 West Second South, 535-7905. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition, the box office will be open Saturday, May 12, from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 19, from noon to curtain at 8 p.m. |
