Herbst, director of the Salt Lake City Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at the University Univer-sity of Utah Medical Center, announced that Dawn Hardy of Davis County has been selected as the 1979 Breath of Life Campaign chairperson for Cystic Fibrosis in West Bountiful. THE DATES for the May bike-a-thon will be announced in the near future. The bike-a-thon will include contact to help educate every parent, grandparent grand-parent and prospective parent about the symptoms of cystic fibrosis and similar lung-damaging lung-damaging diseases, at the same time providing an opportunity op-portunity to support the work of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Foun-dation. IT IS NOT commonly known that about one in twenty persons carries the genetic trait for cystic fibrosis. This would mean that there could be approximately ten million carriers in the nation. Dr. Herbst underscored his remarks by explaining, "Little "Lit-tle more than a decade ago, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Founda-tion was working to keep children with CF alive long enough to start school. Now, we're trying to help some of these same patients, who have grown to young adulthood, enter college or find jobs. "LONGEVITY HAS increased year by year," Herbst continued, "and we have hope that scientists will find a control or cure for cystic cys-tic fibrosis. A major purpose of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Foun-dation is to conquer this tragic inherited disease which occurs in every 1,600 live births in the United States." Through volunteer efforts in chapters across the country, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Breath of Life Campaign helps support: - RESEARCH to find a control con-trol or cure of cystic fibrosis, the leading genetic killer of children. - A network of over 100 Cystic Fibrosis Centers specializing in diagnostic and treatment services for children with CF and other lung-damaging diseases, including asthma, bronchiectasis, bronchiec-tasis, childhood emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. - PUBLIC HEALTH education educa-tion programs to alert parents to the symptoms of lung-damaging lung-damaging disease in their children and to seek the treatments which can improve their children's lives. "When a Cystic Fibrosis Breath of Life volunteer asks for your pledge, please give as generously as you can," Dr. Herbst urged. "Lung-damaging "Lung-damaging diseases still kill more children in this country than any other disease except cancer. "AT LEAST three children die each day from cystic fibrosis, so children with lung-damaging diseases truly need the support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation." West Bountiful citizens who wish to volunteer to help in the campaign are asked to call Dawn Hardy at 292-2769. |
