Show Bear, Cougar Rules Are Set At its April 20 meeting in Cedar City, the Utah State Wildlife Board amended regulations for the taking of cougar and bear during 1979-80. THE BEAR season will be open from April 16 to June 15 and Sept. 1 to Oct. 15. Check the proclamation for areas and special regulations. The board agreed to permit bear baiting under strict regulations during this year's seasons for archers only. Bear baiting has not been permitted in Utah for several years. COUGAR MAY be taken from Nov. 1, 1979 to April 15, 1980, in many parts of the state. At the request of several guides in the Cedar City area, the board extended the cougar pursuit season in several southern counties. Cougars may be pursued from May 9 1979 to June 15, 1979 in Iron! Kane, Washington, Garfield! Piute and Beaver counties. THE ENTIRE state is open to cougar pursuit during the Nov. 1, lo79 to April 15, 1980, season, with the exception of the Escalante-Boulder cougar study area. Pursuit permits allow hunters to tree cougars with dogs but not to kill them. After receiving input from several concerned individuals, in-dividuals, the board decided not to include an additional 100-square mile area as part of the cougar study site. The study is to be done by the Division of Wildlife Resources and the Cooperative Coopera-tive Wildlife Research Unit at Utah State University. IN OTHER action, an emergency proclamation was passed for lynx, bobcat, wolverine and kit fox. The proclamation prohibits the taking or possession of those species or their hides in Utah. There is, however, protection for livestock producers. Depredating animals may be removed by authorized means. The board has been asked to permit spearfishing by scuba divers on certain Utah waters. They will act on this request at their June 14 meeting. |
