Show Davis school district to sell surplus By G. BRETT HART CLEARFIELD OK, bargain hunters, the Davis County School District has a deal for you. The district has announced the grand opening of a school surplus store which will open this Friday to give members of the public the opportunity op-portunity to buy good school supplies sup-plies at bargain basement prices. The store will be located at the Freeport Center in building G-4 and will be open each Friday from 12 to 4 p.m. According to Milford Van Weeid, warehouse manager and purchasing director, school surplus has previously been sold at monthly auctions once or twice a year. "In the past, the big dealers have come in and bought all the items. 4 'This new program gives the individuals in-dividuals in the public the chance to come in and buy a desk or something they want for the house,' said Van Weerd. Camille Fisher, a warehouse secretary sec-retary who will help with the surplus store administration, said the idea was to facilitate getting rid . of used items that have gone through the schools but are in perfectly good working order. She agreed with Van Weerd saying, say-ing, "The auctions used to benefit the junk dealers more than the average person because they could come in and buy large quantities of items when most people just wanted to pick up a single chair or something' The store has in stock items such as student and office desks, chairs, office partitions, calculators, typewriters, etc. Prices are set by Van Weerd who said that although the prices are fixed, fix-ed, they will be very affordable. "We're not here to make a profit. A person who wants to pick up a couple of chairs should be able to do it for a couple of dollars a piece depending on their size." According to Van Weerd, the Granite School District runs a similar simi-lar surplus store which he compared to Davis. "I think ours will be well run, but I have no idea how it will turn out. I guess we'll find out Friday," said Van Weerd. |
