Show Sierra Club attacks state oh White River dam In a press release this week the Utah Chapter Sierra Club attacked the Utah Department of Natural Resources saying the state, "refuses to take action necessary for the effective management of Utah's natural resources and tax dollars." The Sierra Club statement said, "Important reports, critical of state sponsored projects, are apparently routed away from the Governor's desk." The release stated Governor Scott Matheson, has supported the proposed White River Dam Project near Vernal and has not acknowleged important safety reports prepared by the Utah Geological and Mineral Survey. The report stated the suitability of the proposed dam site in the Uintah formation for-mation of clayed sandstone will present many problems in proper anchoring of a large dam. The report also criticized Gordon Harmston, the Director of the Department of Natural Resources, for not taking constructive action on the proported finding and fully appraising the governor of those problems. The release ended stating, "Will the safety and taxes of Utahns be swept away in the flood from a broken White River Dam?" |
