The Utes were behind by 13 points going into the championship finals, but a 4-1 victory by Uintah's 98 pounder, Brett Brown, over Box Elder's Jim Smoot cut the Bees'; first place lead to nine points, 128'2 to 119' 2. Brown dropped Smoot for a takedown in the first round and added a reversal in the third round for a 4-0 lead. Smoot was awarded a stalling point, but Brown downed the Box Elder tussler by three points for first place in the 98 pound class. Spence Ennis of Payson won the 105 pound title when he downed Brian Beasley of Dixie, 7 to 2. Box Elder jumped out to a 1321 to 125 lead over second place, Tooele, when Stewart Richards, a defending state champion, thumped John Olsen of Spanish Fork, 8 to 3, for the 112 pound title. A neutral in the second round gave Uintah's Josh Reynolds a 1-0 lead in the 119 pound championship contest, but the match was placed into overtime when Kirt Palmer of Tooele was awarded a neutral with five seconds left in the third round. A neutral was awarded to Palmer after a meeting between the match referee and a referee on the side of the mat. Reynolds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second round when he was given a stalling point with ten seconds left, but Palmer gained a reversal for a 2-1 lead in the third round. However, Smith dropped Humphries for a takedown to tie up the score at 5-5 and gained a two-point near fall in the closing seconds to win by two points. Box Elder, which had been in first place for most of the tournament, found itself down by 5' 2 points with only one match involving a Box Elder tussler left. The only way the Bees could win the state title would be if Brian Williams pinned undefeated Spencer Blake of Timp View in the 138 pound championship match. The Bees didn't even come close to gaining a pin as Blake improved his record to 31-0 with a 21-5 triumph over Williams of Box Elder. Blake was named as the most outstanding wrestler in the tournament. tour-nament. The battle for first place in the tournament was over with, but the Utes had two wrestlers remaining in the clash for individual first place crowns.
