Show Of o-to yiiuii-l v Officials survey accessibility problems On Tuesday, Feb. 3, Ted Taylor, Clyde Collins and Frank Andreason inspected the handicap accessibility qualifications for Todd Elementary School and West Jr. High School. Ted Taylor is the Uintah County school district maintenance supervisor; Frank Andreason is the director of special education for the school board and Clyde Collins is a member of the special education advisory board. Clyde was asked by Andreason to ac-. company himself and Taylor on a review of the buildings due to Clyde's status as an advisory committee member and the fact that Clyde is a Paraplegic. Clyde is a resident of Roosevelt and has three children enrolled in Uintah County Schools. Superintendent Wayne Reid and Andreason in June 1980 made a walk though of the Vernal schools and those nools in Roosevelt which fall under Uintah County School District Jurisdiction. Reid and Andreason necked the buildings in June to bring buildings up to the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Sec. 504 Jandicapped and elderly citizens lawful building code requirements. J?6 reCent walk through by Taylor, 0Ulns and Andreason is a follow-up !!Pm for findings from the June sbtUral mvestigatin. Andreason arZ: VWe have t0 make our programs nble to the handicapped. By Programs accessible we do not have to construct all of the schools in the Uintah Basin. Programs pertain to education of the student. For instance, we have five elementary schools. We will make one of those elementary schools accessible to a wheelchair person. There will be a full program of subjects offered to that student." Andreason went on to state that since Vernal has only one high school and one junior high then both of these schools will have to be made accessible. Andreason went on to explain that in making the necessary reconstruction of doorways and restrooms to follow federal handicap building codes that to go through and change all of the restrooms in all of the schools, again, is not the idea of the accessibility program. For instance, the schools that are made accessible might have 3 or more restrooms. There will be one set of restrooms remodeled. Collins, Andreason and Taylor found many changes which will need to be made at Todd Elementary and West Junior High. Among the changes are ramps .for access into buildings, restrooms that need to be remodeled, enlargement of doors and reserved handicap signs in parking lots. "Tentatively we are looking at building the changes into the 1981 budget," Andreason reported. Plans are being made to complete a walk through follow-up program in the Vernal schools with the assistance of a paraplegic. |
