He has been professionally selling his art work for over 10 years. He has designed many logos in the Vernal area. Freestone Studio is located at 2991 North 500 East. Roy also provides pro-vides the Vernal Express with political cartoons. Roy Freestone Vernal born artist Roy Freestone was born in 1936 and raised in the Ashley Ward area of Vernal. Roy, along with his wife Pat McKowen Freestone, live on the same property where Roy was born and raised. Roy's art studio, Freestone Studio, is also located on the property. He has had his studio in full operation for three years. Clarence (deceased) and Helen Freestone are Roy's father and mother. Roy's grandfather, George Freestone was the first LDS bishop in Vernal. George came to the Ashley Valley by mule train in 1879. He is also responsible respon-sible for building the first frame house. Roy is the first in his family lineage to be an artist. "I sold my first professional art painting in 1970," stated Roy. He considers himself a self-taught artist. He has put on four one-man art shows in Vernal. He has also taught classes through the Little Gallery of Arts. Roy has served two terms as the vice president of the Little Gallery of Arts for the years of 1979 and 1980. During the last four years of the Uintah County Fair, Roy won "People's Choice" for his art displays. After graduating from Uintah High School he worked in a sign painting shop. Eighteen years elapsed of doing different dif-ferent jobs before Roy decided to do his art full time. Talented at a variety of arts. Roy is accomplished at oil painting, pen and ink. character art of people, landscape oils and political cartoons. He has been providing the Vernal Express with political cartoons since October of 1980. Versatile is another word Roy could easily be known by. Not only does he make all of his own frames but also the molding frame that goes underneath painting canvases. And. yes, he stretches his own canvas from large rolls of the art product. Referring to the many barn wood frames he comments, "In the last three years I think I've sawed up three barns for frames." He also makes many of his own paint brushes. Creating is an art that Roy has become popular at in the Vernal area when it comes to not only intricate art work but also designing business logos, business signs, Christmas cards and invitations. Many of his works are displayed in popular places throughout Vernal such as: The Last Chance Saloon. Target Trucking, 7-11 Cafe, Bev and Millies', and Aspen Cove to name a few. "I feel very fortunate to be able to make a living at the job that I do. Not too many people can say that. I appreciate ap-preciate all the people in the Vernal area who have bought my paintings, especially the lady who has bought eight of my paintings. I have had a happy three years; met a lot of nice people and have covered a lot of ground with art work." stated Roy. Presently Roy is leaching oil painting on Monday at Ben Franklin. During HW1 he plans to spend more time with the oil painting part of his business. The Freestones have one daughter. Tami Freestone McAdams. Pat and Roy are grandparents to one granddaughter. grand-daughter. Pat and Roy have been married for 23 years. |
