Mountain Man Club to hold gun shoot Feb. 21 The Ashley Valley Free Trappers met for their monthly membership meeting Feb. 10 at the home of Brent and Veronica Boren, 280 West 300 South in Vernal. The Free Trappers are Vernal's only muzzleloading gun club. The club consists primarily of mountain men and buckskinners and their families. The club began meeting in April of 1980. The by-laws and officers for the club were elected in June 1980. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the home of Brent and Veronica Boren. This month's presentation was conducted by Terry Hatch. Terry gave an informative lecture and demonstration demon-stration on how to make a pattern for sewing quill work and how to properly sew porcupine quills. A variety of activities keeps the club busy. The club organizes shoots and rendezvous, school and civic group presentations, and recently aided the Boy Scouts of America with their winter survival camp. The survival camp was held at Horseshoe Bend on the Green River, Jan. 24. Both regular meetings and special activities include craft and history sessions. History and reproducing the crafts authentically are both cradled together. It is important to the buckskinner to reproduce the craft as exactly as possible according to the history data collected.
