Show Great Archaeologists Are Exploring Book Of Mormon Lands At Present One of the most significant developments ,to take place in Book of Mormon annals, is the recent organization of the New World Archaeological Foundation. Founda-tion. The NWAF is incorporated under the laws of California for the purpose of archaeological research in Central America and Mexico, where the earliest high civilizations of the western hemisphere hem-isphere have been found. It is a non-profit organization formed by a group of Americans, who will constitute its Board of Directors. Di-rectors. The Foundation will conduct explorations and excavations exca-vations on a major scale in Mexico Mex-ico and Central America, using the talents of world-famed scholars and scientists. The president of the organization, organ-ization, Thomas Stuart Ferguson, Fergu-son, attorney of Oakland. Calif., is co-author of the recent book, "Ancient America and the Book of Mormon." Five of the most i notable archaeologists of America Amer-ica are giving theu- full cooperation cooper-ation to the Foundation. Among the advisers to the new organization organ-ization are Alfred V. Kidder, Ph.D., for the past twenty years Director of Archaeology of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Washing-ton, D. C, he being vice-president of the NWAF; Gordon Wil-ley. Wil-ley. Phd.D., Professor of Mexi can Archaeology, Harvard University; Uni-versity; Dr. M. Wells Jake-man, Jake-man, Ph.D., Chairman of the Department of Archaeology, of Brigham Young University; Dr. Gordon F. Ekholm, Archaeologist Archaeolo-gist of the American Museum of Natural History. New York City. A Foundation expedition left Mexico City November 29, and is now at work clearing forest and jungle trails leading to some buried cities in southernmost southern-most Mexico. The cities have never before been excavated or ! explored. Expedition personnel includes tne neia airector, Professor Pro-fessor Pedro Armillas, assistant director, William Sanders of Harvard University, and two archaeologists from the Brigham Young University, John Soren-sen Soren-sen and Gareth Lowe. Extensive excavations will be commenced in the near future. The Foundation is a privately undertaken, fact-finding institution. institu-tion. It is non-sectarian. A number num-ber of Latter-Day Saints are interested in-terested in the organization and much of the support for the organization' or-ganization' is coming from the Mormon people. As possessors of, and believers in the Book of Mormon, Latter-Day Saints have a keen interest in the great civilizations of Ancient America. The Mexican government has j granted the NWAF a large ter-, ter-, ritory in sourthern-most Mexico where many ancient cities are known to be buried. This region |
