Show Union Tops Uintah Vith 4946 Win As Duchesne Wins From Tabiona; Ken Nickell, Udell Birch In Star Roles It took four full quarters of basketball for the Cougars from Union High School, and the Duchesne Du-chesne Eagles to register brief wins over Uintah and Tabiona in the three-week old Basin basketball bas-ketball tussle. The Cougars are now atop the heap with Duchesne Du-chesne holding down third spot, a half game behind Uintah, who with two wins and one loss are in second. That Union-Uintah battle was no different than contests of the past few years. . . It was a battle down to the wire, with team and student body rivalry as keen as it could possibly be. The big Union Un-ion gym was packed to capacity, and from the first whistle to the last the cheering was at a high pitch, as both teams fought for the lead that could mean a trip to the Class B tourney at Provo in March. The Utes led all the way during dur-ing three and a half quarters, but faltered late in the final period as Doyle Huber, who replaced re-placed John Benson after the latter fouled out, hit a neat jump shot from outside, and By-rell By-rell Lamb dropped two from the foul line to give the Cougars their first lead of the ball game, 42-41. The Utes went to work early in the game as they threw a defense against the Cougars that had them stopped, so far as inside in-side shooting was concerned. With Freestone hogging the Cougar rebounds and Tullis' STANDING OF TEAMS Uintah Division won lost Union 2 0 Uintah 2 1 Duchesne l 1 Tabiona 1 2 Altamont 0 2 Results Last Week: Union 49, Uintah 46 Duchesne 51, Tabiona .48 This Week's Schedule (Jan. 28) Union at Tabiona Duchesne at Altamont I Carbon High at Uintah (Practice) (Saturday, 8 p.m.) Carbon High at Union (Practice) shooting!, Uintah looked like a sure winner. Only once until the final five minutes of the game did Union catch up to the Utes and. that was at the end of the first quarter when Ken Nickell hit one from the center of the floor just as the gun ended the quarter, to tie the game up at 11 all. There were a lot of contributing contribut-ing factors to the ball game Uintah's .ability to tie up the Cougars the first half Tullis' Tul-lis' brilliant shooting the fine utility job turned in by Gordon Eldredge, who took over ov-er the Ute's sharpshooter, Tullis, in the last half, and looked like he might crowd someone out of a starting spot in future games The close officiating, and the ability of the Cougars to freeze the ball the last two minutes of the game after they had taken tak-en a 5-point lead. All were important, im-portant, but the highlight of the game was the brilliant play of Ken Nickell. This 3-year veteran kept the Cougars in the ball game with his shooting, and his work on defense was remarkable. remark-able. He connected for 16 points, which was second to Tullis' 17 for high honors. Coach Darwin Woodberry's Duchesne lads had to stave off a determined Tabiona rally in the final period as they squeak- ed by with a 51-48 win over the Tigers at Duchesne. Udell Birch, elongated center for the Eagles, with 22 points, was the big gun in the Eagles' victory. However, he was pressed by Basil, clever Tiger forward, who came through with 16. Duchesne took an 11 point lead at the first quarter, ran this to 26-21 at the half, and was way out front with 42-29 at the third period. Charles Denver, clever little sophomore forward, added a total to-tal of 24 points to the books as the "B" Cougars routed the visiting vis-iting Uintah B's, 49-34, in a preliminary pre-liminary game. He hit 10 from the field and four out of seven from the foul line for his two dozen points. Friday night the Cougars travel up Tabiona way. where they'll attempt to keep their slate clean, and Duchesne moves to Altamont to meet the winless Longhorns. Uintah draws a bye, but will play a practice game with Carbon High of Price. The Dinosaurs will meet Union on Saturday night at Union, at 8 p.m. The box scores: UNION G T F P I G T F P Huber 1 3 4 Lamb 3 4 4 10 1 Nickell 7 3 2 18 Perry 12 2 4 Benson 2 5 3 7 Eldredge 2 5 3 7 Ross 1113 TOTALS 17 19 15 49 UINTAH G T F (P Hacking 13 2 4 Wells 2 4 2 6 Anderson 0 5 3 3 Tullis 5 11 7 17 Freestone 2 2 2 6 Lee 2 5 2 6 Johnson 1 4 2 4 TOTALS 13 34 20 46 Score by quarters: Uintah 11 24 38 46 Union 11 22 32 49 Officials: Hardy and Ovard.
