Show f Williamson wins Heavyweight Title as Rams place Third going into the tournament and they proved it to everybody." The final team scores were: Monticello 145, North Sevier 76, Parowan 59, Gunnison 54'2, North Summit 48, Duchesne 41 1 Reaver 26, Park City 18, Kanab 15' 2, Altamont 14, Milford 14, Piute 13; South Rich 12, South Summit 11 and Panguitch 8. Individually, Larry Green at 98 pounds, had four very tought matches. In the first round Larry beat Sorensen pf North Sevier 3 to l in overtime. Next Larry lost, by a pin, to Jones of North Summit who won the state championship in this weight. In a wrestle-back Larry then beat Herrera of Monticello 2 to 1. In the consolation finals Larry wrestled Sorensen of North Sevier for the second time in the very contraversal stalling call with one second remaining in the match costing Kay the lead. Paul Williamson, the other senior captain on this years team and the smallest heavyweightwrestler in the tournament played the roll of the giant killer and went all the way to the State Championship. Paul's first victory was over Holloway of Green River by a score of 9 to 4. Next Paul beat a very large wrestler, Dawson of South Rich, pinning him in the second round. In the championship cham-pionship match Paul proved to to be a true champion. After falling behind to'Lance ofMonticello 6 to ! 1 early in the match. Paul stormed by to tie the score at 6-all 6-all and with only 18 seconds remaining in the match Paul turned him on his back for ai three point near fall and the state championship at the unlimited weight. This victory was doubly impressive since Paul missed nearly half the season after suffering a broken arm during the last week of the football season. He has worked very hard to get in shape and improve himself. The remainder of the PHS wrestling team is to be commended com-mended for the spirit and postivie attitude they generated at the state tournament in supporting Larry, Tom, Lee and Paul. A large and very enthusiastic group of fans braved hazardous weather conditions to follow the Ram wrestlers to the state tournament.. "Our wrestling fans are the greatest," stated Coach Jenson. "They really help to get us going. For the wrestlers and myself, I would like to thank them for their, tremendous support." - . The wrestling team was honored in a special assembly Monday morning by- the PHS studentbody. Special awards were presented to captains for the season, Kay Lister and Paul Williamson. Lee Oglesby received the Tiger Tail Award" as the "most aggressive wrestler during the year. Lee lead the team in five statistical catagories this season including takedowns, pins, and wins. . PAROWAN - Five young men carried the hopes and pride of Parowan High School to Salina this past weekend to the 1A State Wrestling Tournament. These five , determined wrestlers were the surprise of the tournament. Of the seventeen total matches these boys were involved in, they won 13 with no one wrestler lossing more than one match and all placing third or higher in the state. These five heros are Larry Green, Tom . Benhard, Lee Oglesby, Kay Lister and Paul Williamson. After the first day of the tournament the Rams were in second place behind Monticello, who completely ran away with the first place honors; but, followed closely by host North Sevier who won the Region 8 tournament and took eleven wrestlers into the. state tournament. tour-nament. The Rams down fall came in the consolation semi-finals on Saturday afternoon when North Sevier won six of the eight matches they were involved in to move ahead of the Rams in the team scoring. As Coach Dave Jensen said,"We just didn't get enough help from other teams to ' stop them.". "I felt that our wrestlers were totally committed and gave a super effort in every match," said Coach Jenson at the conclusion con-clusion of the tournament. This was three wins in a row for Larry after Sorensen won their first two ' meetings. Larry is a sophomore. At 105 pounds, senior Tom Benhard captured second place in the state and wrestled extremely ex-tremely well. In his first match he defeated Bond of Monticello 4 to 0. In the semi-finals Tom pinned Orgill of North Summit to advance to the championship match where he lost, bv a pin, to Johnson of North Sevier, who is a two time state champion. In the championship match Lee fell behind 5 to 0 to Rogers of Monticello Mon-ticello early in the match. After that Lee dominated the match and battled back to within one point, when Lee turned Rogers on his back as time expired. "Kay Lister, a senior captain for the Rams this season, wrestling in the 185 pound class wrestled, what turned out to be, the championship match of the tournament in his first match. RUNNERUPS. It was Parowan Merc in second place in the Bantam Basketball program. They finished right behind Parowan Trading Center. They were coached by George D. Haley. TAKE THIRD AT STATE. Kay wrestled Meeks of Altamont, a tremendously strong young man. Kay fell fehind 5 to 0 in the opening seconds of the match then battled back to lead by two points, 10 to 8 with less than 30 seconds left In the match, when Meeks used all this power to roll Kay into a pinning combination com-bination and win the match. Kay went on to win his next three . matches and place third in the tournament. Meeks went on to pin his man in the finals, but was disqualified on a very con-traversal con-traversal body slam call and placed second. Kay's first victory vic-tory was over Ford of Park City with a pin in 25 seconds of the first round. Kay next defeated Black of North Summit 9-8 in a very hard fought match. In the consolation finals Kay got some sweet revenge defeating Lop-shire Lop-shire of Piute 6 to 3.
