Show Linda Green, Parowan wins SUSC Annual Bridge Building Contest A model bridge capable of withstanding 1,184 pounds of pressure has gained first place honors in Soutl rn Utah State College's annual high school bridge building contest. Linda Green, a Parowan High School senior, constructed the winning structure from one of 300 bridge building kits, each weighing less than one and one-fourth one-fourth ounces, which were f distributed among 15 Utah hig schools during December and January. Ms. Green will b awarded a $300 scholarship to SUSC at an American Society of Civil Engineering banquet Friday evening in Cedar City. The banquet is held annually in conjunction with National Engineering Week February 22-28. schools. SUSC Competition Prizes for winners in bridge building competition between SUSC students will also be awarded at the banquet. SUSC bridges will be judged Friday at noon in the SUSC student center .lounge. "We'd be pleased to have interested in-terested persons attend the bridge judging at SUSC and see just how much strength can be contained in one tube of glue, a 16 inch cardboard deck, two pine blocks and 33 linear feet of balsa wood strips," Professor Kimball said. "The bridge building activity has proven of great value to students in sharpening their t craftsmanship, creative skills and the ability to apply math and science training to an interesting and challenging project," Kimball said. Other high school winners will be awarded cash prizes for their winning bridges at the annual ' banquet, Richard N. Kimball, associate professor of : engineering at SUSC notes. Taking second place honors in high school competition was Jerry Twitchell, Piute High School, for his 1,125 pound capacity bridge and third place winner Reed Jeffery, Delta High School, for a bridge withstanding 1,020 pounds pressure. Other model bridge winners will be honored from Kanab, Beaver, Dixie, Enterprise, Millard, Cedar, Milford, Panguitch, Valley, Hurricane, Bryce Valley and Escalante high Speaker He notes that John Arlidge, Nevad Power Company, Las Vegas, will be the guest speaker at the ASCE banquet Friday evening. Arlidge will speak on the Allen-Warner Valley Energy Project. The banquet will begin at 7 pm in the Town and Country Restaurant.
