Show Brake Check Area on SR59 The Utah Department of Transportation is beginning work today on a brake check area on the summit of SR-59 above the community of Hurricane. Alex Mansour, UDOT District 5 Director, said the area will be built with special funds made available to his office through the Maintenance Block Authority. The need for the brake check area is the result of ! four documented cases of ! runaway trucks. "We have spent nearly three quarters of a million dollars improving SR-59 between Hurricane and the Arizona line and it has resulted in more traffic and higher operating speeds," said Mr. Mansour. "It's just pure luck that no one has been injured or killed in the four runaway incidents." The brake check area will be a 300-foot long turnout at a point prior to the steepest part of the grade on SR-59 heading northwest into Hurricane. Mansour says he believes there will be enough money to add at least one truck turnout lane |
