It is a disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of very fine silicate or quartz dust. The disease is frequently found among miners. -by Cheryl Holcomb, Bassett, Va. 50 years ago Under the auspices of the Daughters of the Pioneer Memorial Committee, and in the presence of mast of the members of the committee, with officers of city and county camps, the mayor and a number of citizens, two beautiful weeping willow trees were planted near the Pioneer Cabin in the City Park. The trees were planted in loving memory of two departed Camp Captaias, Mrs. Sarah A. Bulloch and Mrs. Anna L. Froyd. Mrs. Elizabeth W. Leigh planted a tree for Mrs. Bulloch and Mrs. Henrietta L. Jones planted the tree for Mrs. Froyd. They were planted under the direction of Mr. Heber C. Jenson, who was untiring and liberal with his labor and time in assisting the DUPs with their Old Cabin Project. 25 years ago Miss Ethel Smith was elected president of the Cedar City Business & Professional Woniens Club at a regular meeting of the organization. Officers elected to serve with her were Mary Anker, vice president; Mary Lunt, recording secretary; Myrna Hansink, treasurer; andLydia Harter, corresponding secretary. Dr. R. G. Williams addressed the group on the subject of public health insurance. Miss Pauline Hirschi and Miss Caroline Boyns entertained the group with a comic skit, baton twirling and a tap dance number. Myrtle W. Heywood, chairman of the health and safety committee, com-mittee, was in charge of the program. 10 years ago Blain (Fella) Johnson, son of Blaine and Loa Johnson, of Cedar City, received a call from the Cedar Eighth Ward to serve a mission for the LDS Church in the Northern Far East Mission (Japan) with headquarters in Tokyo. Johnson was a graduate of Cedar City High School, where he was active in athletics and in music, particularly band. He was also active in MIA basketball and attended College of Southern Utah (SUSC) before going on his mission. By Dorothy Rogers |
