Show Kim Neilsen clears bar at 7 4 named MCAA All -American Cedar High School when he captured state honors his junior and senior year. He became the first Utah prepster to leap 7-0 when he cleared that height as a senior in the Snow College Invitational Meet. Currently Neilsen is a sophomore at BYU. He has an indoor mark of 7-4 to his credit. His 7-4 leap came in January at an indoor meet at thePocatello Minidome. It is a record for BYU. "Competition helps me to set goals and go out and concentrate to accomplish them," Neilsen was quoted as saying. "What discourages me is not being able to do what I would like to do. To want to go 7-6 in a meet and not even get 7-4," he says. "The most important im-portant thing right now is track, because it is somehting I can excell in," he said. His jumping style was also descriDed. After planting his right foot approximately an arm's length from the pole, Neilsen springs upward leaning and arching his body into his version of the famed Fosbury Flop. Local fans are following Neilsen's career with interest. Kim Neilsen of Cedar City, one of the outstanding jumpers in the nation, is currently ranked second in the NCAA with an indoor mark of 7-4 and was named All-American in the NCAA Indoor championships with a 'leap of 7-2, it was reported this week in the "Daily Universe," student publication on the Brigham Young University campus. Neilsen was featured in a story written by Kevin Cole of the Universe staff. "He (Neilsen) puts his mind to the bar and gets over it," Coach Clarence Robison was quoted as saying. "Neilsen has a great natural spring, excellent leg strength and can apply power whenever he needs to," Robison says.
