The volunteer fire department has been kept busy lately with a number of fires. Considerable damage was done by fire to the Art Lowder home, some slight damage to the roof of the Gordon Adams home and a school bus converted into a camp trailer was completely consumed by fire last week. The bus owned by Brad Jones was accidentally started on fire when a candle caught the curtains. Brad's sister and a friend escaped safely before the fire got out of hand. The department has also responded to several brush fires in the area. Mr. Orton wishes to remind the public that open burning of any kind except in a screen covered barrel or incinerator is illegal and citatioas will be issued to violators. A permit must be obtained and the fire department informed of any open burning bur-ning to be done. One fire hazard the department wishes to have eliminated is weed covered vacant lots especially those next to lots with homes or other structures on them. These should be cleaned up or the city can condemn them and clean them up, billing the owner for the cost. The Parowan Fire Departm ent is one of the best in the state responding in minutes to any fire, but the conditions now are so extreme fire gets out of control very quickly and must be prevented whenever possible. |
