"When vacancies occur, the board may choose to transfer an existing employee to a vacancy, open the position internally for application, open the position internally and externally ex-ternally for applications, or may choose not to fill the position at all. If positions are opened for applciation, affirmative action procedures must be followed." The intent of the board, according to Dr. Morris, is to strenghthen the policy i and to clarify the options open to the board relative to filling vacancies and the ability to transfer within the district. The Affirmative Action hiring practices of the Iron County School District were reviewed at the Board meeting held Monday. "Affirmative Action means just that," Superintendent J. Clair Morris told the board members. "It is an attempt, as dictated by state and federal laws to take action to insure that the district provides equal employment em-ployment opportunities regardless of race, creed or sex." Details of the Affirmative Action plan of the Iron County School District were reviewed. However, a procedure to develop upward- mobility capabilities appeared to be inadequate and an addition to the policy of the district was approved to provide options for the board in handling vacancies. Initially the new policy authorizes the board to "open the position internally in-ternally for applications, open the position internally and externally for applications or choose not to fill the position at all."
