Show Water Sam pies test Negative Water samples taken in Fiddfers Canyon northeast of Cedar City in June did not show high levels of nitrates or sulfates according to water specialists who are administering ad-ministering the county's participation in a 208 Water Study program through the Five County Association of Governments. The county decided to participate in the program because of high levels of the chemicals in areas of the valley which were above the Environmental Protection Agency's guidelines. Joe Comp and Harl Judd, professors at Southern Utah State College have been analzying the water samples. They said that the results are not conclusive that the contaminants are not coming from the canyon because they have only tested the surface water. Joe Melling of FCAOG is heading the sampling program which includes 31 wells. The fourth group of samples will be taken later this month and the sampling will continue throughout the year. The specialists hope to be able to begin making some conclusions about the troubled areas after the next group of samples is analyzed. Areas which have shown the high levels in the past include Cottonwood and Spanish Trails subdivisions in the valley. Melling said that he plans to contact Mobil Oil Corporation which has been conducting seismographic tests to see if they have discovered any unusual geological formations in the area. |
