PHS Students Write Own Broadway Show This year the students of Parowan High School are doing do-ing something different in the way of an operetta. They are writing, acting, singing and dancing to their own original leads. Last fall a group of students enrolled in the chorus, chor-us, met at noon times to work out a plot, characters and songs. Under the direction of Robert Rob-ert Potter, music teacher at the school, lyrics for songs were written, melodies worked out and dances were planned. The completed script was pre- j sented to the entire chorus and i the casting for parts completed. complet-ed. To give more students an opportunity to have a lead, the girls' parts have been double dou-ble cast. I The show has an imposing title: "The Mournful Miners' Bashful Brides or A Wiley Way to Win a Wife." When asked about the plot Mr. Potter Pot-ter said: "Well it's sort of a combination of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "The Hallelujah Hal-lelujah Trail," "Mail Order' Bride", and "How the West Was Won." Basically it involves in-volves a group of lonely miners min-ers in the 1890's from Slippery Rock, Colo., who recognize the need' for the refining touch of ladies. Johnny, now a gambler, gamb-ler, agrees to try to get his former co-Workers from the New York stage to come West. To make' the girls more eager to come he tells them all the miners are lonely million-naires. million-naires. To keep the miners on their best behavior he tells them the chorus girls are society so-ciety ladies of New York. After many problems and humorous situations a near tragedy at the mine brings the moment of truth, and of course all ends happy. When asked if he had any special problems, Mr. Potter said "Costumes are a bit hard to come by and the kids are scouring the attics looking for bustles, high button shoes and derbies. By the way if any of the folks in Parowan have old clothes of the "Gay Nineties" we'd surely appreciate the loan of them. And if they're no longer of use to the owner we will give them an honored place in our growing costume department. The operetta will be presented pre-sented on Friday and Saturday, Satur-day, April 7 and 8 in the multipurpose mul-tipurpose room of the Elementary Elemen-tary School. There will be no admission charge and everyone every-one is invited to attend. |
