Show Safeway Undefeated in National Little League. NATIONAL LITTLE LEAGUE Safeway 4 0 1.000 Jayceea 4 1 .800 Columbia 2 2 .500 Flks 1 4 .200 Lions 0 ; 4 .000 Safeway took a firm hold on I first plac in the National Little League standings with two victories vic-tories this week, but both came r - hard for the leaders. The Safeway crew pulled out a 6 to 5 victory over Elks in extra innings, then blew a 9 to 0 lead against Lions and finally won by a 12 to 11 margin. Against Elks, Safeway belted out eight hits including a home run and a double by Kevin Rowley. Row-ley. Ronnie Hunt also doubled In the extra inning. For Elks Mark Lunt homered and Robert Haider, Alex Shepherd and Chad Prlsbrey each doubled. A total of 11 hits for Elks wasn't enough for the victory. Kenneth Pryor and Mark Lunt were the starting pitchers. They both had to leave after the sixth inning and Steven Anderson for Safeway came on to pick up the victory. Robert Haider Hai-der took the loss for Elks. Safeway pushed In nine runs in the first inning of play against Lions Monday night but the Tamers came roaring back to tie the score in the fourth inning. in-ning. In the fifth, Rowley hit a three run homer for Safeway to move them out in front 12 to 9, but Lions came back to score two and nearly catch the league leaders. J. D. Webb homered for Lions in the game. Anderson was the starter and Pryor came in in relief for Safeway. Webb started and Spevak was called to the mound early to finish the game. Mike Rice doubled for Lions and Ronnie Hunt and Anderson An-derson doubled for Safeway in the game. In other games of the week Jaycee stayed in the running with victories over the same two teams. Jaycees defeated Lions 11 to 6 then defeated Elks 5 to 2. Against Lions the Jaycees got nine hits including doubles by Brent Carlson and Bruce Black-ner. Black-ner. Lions had only three hits but two were doubles by Paul Harris and Lane Spevak. Bruce Blackner was the winning pit- cher and Spevak the loser. Barry Blake allowed only three hits to Elks to pick up the victory vic-tory for Jaycees Tuesday. Robert Hairier and Billy Randall pitched for Elks. Jaycees had five hits and Elks had three. Ail were single. Jaycees also pulled a third victory out of the fire with a 3 to 1 victory over Columbia. Lynn Davis held Columbia to three hits and Eddie Nelson held the Jaycees to Just three hits. All three Jaycee runs came in the top of the sixth inning on one hit, two walks and an error. Alan Averrett of Columbia doubled for the only extra base hit. Davis collected nine strikeouts and Nelson Nel-son was credited with 13. In the only other game of the week Elks moved out of the cellar cel-lar with a 14 to 7 win over Lions. Ross Miller was the winning pitcher and Mark Lunt belted two home runs to pace the Elks hitting attack. Bryce Betensen and Tom Cardon shared mound duty for Lions. Cardon collected all three hits for Lions including a double. |
