Show Cedar Marine Given Far East Assignment OKINAWA (FHTNC) Marine Mar-ine First Lt. Douglas C. Bralth-waite, Bralth-waite, son of Dr. and Mrs. Roy-den Roy-den C. Braithwalte of Cedar City, left this month for the Far East aboard the Navy transport USS General Mann from San Diego, Calif. He will serve a 13-month tour of duty with the Third Marine Mar-ine Division in Okinawa. Okinawa, the center of American Ameri-can activity and interest in the Far East, is an island within the Ryukua chain. These islands, stretch about 800 miles along the coast of the Asian mainland. The northenmost islands approach ap-proach the southernmost Japanese Japan-ese main island, and the southern south-ern part of the Ryuku chain is just 40 miles east of Taiwan. . The island is only 56 miles long and varies from two to 17 miles in width. It is about 960 miles from Tokyo and 900 miles from Hong Kong, China. The battalion, about 1,000 strong, commanded by Major Ed-mond Ed-mond G. Dernlng, will stop in Hawaii and Japan for liberty while on the way to Okinawa. |
