Show BYU Professor Appointed CSU Director; Makes Campus Tour New CSU Director Meets Faculty, Students Dr. Royden C. Eraithwaite, newly appointed director of the college of Southern Utah, to succeed suc-ceed Dr. Daryl Chase, made his first appearance before the CSU student body today, Thursday, at a special assembly. Following the assembly Dr. Braithwaite met at a luncheon with faculty members and toured tour-ed the compus and its facilities during the afternoon. Dr. Braithwaite was introduced to the student body and facility by Dr. Chase, who had returned to the campus for the special occasion. oc-casion. Dr. Chase, now president of the Utah Stale Agricultural College at Logan, conducted the campus tour also. At the student body assembly assem-bly Dr. Chase also Introduced Charles R. Hunter, member of the board of trustees of the Utah State Agricultural College, who headed the committee responsible responsi-ble for the selection of the new director. Dr. Chase recalled Ihe pleasant experiences that he and his family fam-ily had had while at CSU. He also brought to mind the excellent excel-lent faculty and student body, and the splendid cooperation that he had receiVed from the townspeople. towns-people. Hunter was the second speaker speak-er at the assembly and he told of the problems involved in the selection of a man to fill the shoes of Dr. Chase as director of the college. He also discussed the pressure that was brought on him from some quarters in making the selection. He stated, however, that he felt that the right man had been chosen to guide the campti3 activities. Dr. Braithwaite, appearing before be-fore the student body for the first time, told of the "literally hundreds" of romments he had heard since his appointment concerning the college. He is acquainted ac-quainted with tha fine work at C S U, he said, and he pledged himself to carry on the work of growth and expansion that has been prophesied by Dr. Chase. Prominent BYU Educator Named By Board to Head Local College Dr. Royden C. Braithwaite, 42, native of Manti, co-dean co-dean of the college of family living, Brigham Young University, Uni-versity, and prominent Utah educator, has been named director of the College of Southern Utah, and is expecting to assume his. duties at the Cedar City school in the very near future. He was named Saturday by the board of trustees of the Utah State Agricultural College, to succeed Dr. Daryl Chase, who recently was named president of the U S A C. Dr. Chase was moved to the Logan Lo-gan school when Dr. IJenry Al-dous Al-dous Dixon was elected to Congress Con-gress from the First Utah Congressional Con-gressional District. Dr. Braithwaite Is in Cedar City today, meeting faculty, students and townspeople, and becoming acquainted with the college plant, the state school background back-ground and problems. It will take a short time, it is understood, for Mr. Braithwaite to complete details of his responsibilities at BYU, but school leaders report that this will be attended to as quickly as possible in order that the new director can soon begin his active service at southern Utah's state school at Cedar City. Appointed Saturday The appointment of Dr. Braithwaite Braith-waite to the CSU position was made at the regular meetinir of the board Saturday after the College Col-lege of Southern Utah committee commit-tee of the board, headed by Charles R. Hunter of Cedar City, had submitted the names of three candidates for the position. Appointment Ap-pointment was made by secret ballot, it Is understood, with one of the three candidates ellmlnat-ed ellmlnat-ed on each of the first and second sec-ond ballots for the position. The new director of C S U received re-ceived his B. S. degree In educational edu-cational administration from the B Y U in 1937. Ha studied for his master's degree at Stanford Unl- ' versity, and received his Ph. D. degree in educational and social physiology from Cornel University Univer-sity in New York. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs Charles G. Braithwaite Braith-waite of Mantl. Before studying at B Y U he attended Snow College Col-lege at Ephralm. Wide Experience After receiving his degree at Cornell Dr. Braithwaite was a member of the University staff for nearly three years. He has taught in seminaries at Heber and Jordan, and was director of the L D S Institutes of Religion at Dixie College in St. George, and Weber College in Ogden, be-foie be-foie returning to B Y U as a member of the college of family living staff. Dr. Braithwaite is a member of the high council of the Utah Stake and is an active member of the Park Ward in Provo. Dur-ing Dur-ing World War II he served as an Army Chaplain in Italy. He is married to. the former Alice Todd and thev have three sons, Douglas, 16; Karl, 12, and Bobby, 4.
