Show Reading Club Hears Report On Canyon Romance The Summer Reading Club met Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Jessie Lou Albertson with Thirza Little as assistant hostess. host-ess. Thirteen members were present pres-ent to hear the club's special guest, Mrs. Roe Palmer, review the book, "Listen Bright Angel," by Edward Carle. This book published in 1945 tells of the origin and discovery of Grand Canyon, how a million years or more ago a small stream began cutting its way into the earth's surface and through the ages' is still at work. It tells of the many adventures and romances ro-mances within the sculptured walls of the canyon and countless count-less attempts to navigate the treacherous river, of ship wrecks and deaths by drowning of the Powell expedition. The story of tragedy of the bride and groom lost in the river riv-er and of finding their boat caught in rocks of perfect order later, and of the Havi Supi Indians In-dians who live far down in the depths of the canyon near the river. They have Jived there for generations untold with little or no contact with the world above them. They live mostly on food produced on the fertile river banks'. Recently tourists have begun be-gun to take the trip down the narrow trail on sure-footed animals ani-mals with a guide for the three day trip. The book was extremeny interesting in-teresting to all since the canyon is just a few hours ride from Cedar Ce-dar City and many of th,e members mem-bers have stood on Bright Angel Point and gazed with awe and wonder at the sight. |
