Show (By Klien Rollo) Well it's all over but the shouting and that will be going go-ing on in the minds and hearts of 14 Little League All-stars, All-stars, their manager Dee Cowan, and myself, and fans of Cedar City who helped carry them to second place in the Western Regional Little League play-offs. ; Fourteen boys, who have seen a lot, learned a little and given all they had, were back in Cedar City Monday morn-at morn-at 12.05 and in their homes after six days of fun, glamour, laughs, tears and an experience ; that they will never forget. ; In addition to the three ball ', games which the boys played s to put them in second place, the highest ever received by a Utah ' team, the boys enjoyed sights j that they may never have an op- portunity to see again in their entire lives. For many the 14 hour train ride to Santa Monica was the first train trip and for a goodly share of the boys it was their first trip to California. TV Show Guests Among the many things that they saw in between games were two national television shows the Art Linkletter Show and the Bob Crosby show. At the Bob Crosby Show the MC asked the boys where they were from and it was the first and last time during dur-ing the trip that they all didn't speak at once. They were petrified petri-fied and in just barely a whis-J per Sam ChamberJain got out the word "Cedar City" and when the MC asked "Cedar City what?" I managed, by cupping my ears with both hands', to vaguely hear a meek "Utah." To detect the owner of the quiet voice was impossible im-possible for we had never heard any of the boys whisper before. the trip to the CBS Television City was arranged through KSUB here in Cedar City and the people at the studios were most cordial. The trip was made Wednesday afternoon. Early to Bed Wednesday evening the boys hit the sack early, after a short bit of horseplay at the Rarnsay Military School. All eight of the participating teams were housed and fed at the Ramsey school and truly the accommodations excellent. Following the old Army style each team had a squad room and .Dee and I served as leaders in the room with the boys. Food, which was served punctually at 7:30 a. m. for breakfast, 12:30 for lunch and 6 p. m. for dinner was also excellent. ex-cellent. Wholesome and regular meals helped keep all of the boys In tip-top shape. Following our opening game against Visalia, which the boys won 6 to 2, we made a fast trip across Los Angeles to the Goodyear Good-year Rubber Company plant where arrangements had been made to -jive the boys a ride on a blimp. The blimp ride was quite the experience in itself. Six passengers passen-gers were taken up each trip and the blimp, the use of which was made possible by the Goodyear people, made three trips. All of the boys' .eaJly enjoyed that ride. Ground work for the ride was laid here in Cedar City by Merrill Mer-rill Mcmmott, local represcnta. tive. Right her might be a good spot to thr.v.v in a plug for the Salt Lake Tribune and its fine representative Bill Coltrin. Bill made the trip down with the boys, even got out of a nice sleeper at 3 a. m. to meet us at Lund. The Salt Lake Tribune sponsored the trip, paying the expenses getting to and from the picking up the tab on mea.'s for tnose two tiips. Bill, whom most of you know by now for his fine coverage in the Tribune during the tournament, was really a fan for the Cedar City club. He and his fine wife were rfght there with the Cedar City rooters giving giv-ing everything they had from the lung department and most of the boys learned to call Bill by his first name and to respect his presence for the fine help he gave us. Bill Is the sectionaj director di-rector for section six, and his Interest in the program is keen. Fight Nerrousness Attempting to hold the boys' down Friday morning prior to our game with Vancouver was quite a job but we managed to get them relaxed for a little while before we left for the field. The game which we won, is covered in another story. This little piece is devoted to "outside" activities. activi-ties. Following that game we again boarded cars for Ocean Park, an amusement park at Santa San-ta Monica. Leigh Rosenberg, Larry Lar-ry Anderson, Donnie Roberts, Danny Lindsay and Douglas Mc-Knight Mc-Knight headed for the roller coaster for the first ride they made. Following their experience the only thing left to save face was for Dee and a parent, Dart Lindsay, Lind-say, his son Danny and Doug for the second trip, to go over the top. Man, what a ride. Some of the boys delayed the trip but all finally made the ride. Most of them, however, were not anxious for a second trip. Listen to Lindell With the championship game against San Diego scheduled for 4:30 p. m. Saturday we had a lot of time to kill that morning. John Lindell, 7-Up representative, the sponsor of the Regional Tourney, spent about an hour with the boys and it was the second time during the trip that they just sat and listened. Lindell is a former pitcher for the New York Yankees Yan-kees and he surely gave the boys a lot of fine pointers. From Lindell Lin-dell they took the pointers too and were asking for more. Inci-dentally Inci-dentally the big leaguer was highly complimentary of the fine play of the Cedar City boys. Following that brief interview we took a side trip to an aquarium aquar-ium just outside of Santa Moni ca. We arrived just in time to see the attendant feeding the porpoise, and man, how those things could leave the water. It furnished a fine break for the boys and I believe they thoroughly thor-oughly enjoyed it. Dee and I almost' al-most' missed the place. I thought Dee was lost and he thought I was lost. The boys knew we were both lost and did they ride us. Entertained by Elks Saturday evening the Elks Lodge of Santa Monica put on a big feed and a fine program for all of the participants. Cedar City, along with San Diego, was given special attention and both teams were given a lot of praise. Roger Lewis, the only Little Leaguer who participated on the program, gave the invocation and his parents and all Cedar City can reajly be proud of him, he did such a splendid job. We headed for the bus terminal termin-al early Sunday morning and following a wait there we boarded board-ed the City of St. Louis for Cedar Ce-dar City. One other point I might bring out is the system of uncle that the Elks Lodge in Santa Monica provided. We had three Elks as signed to us and at least one of the three was with us constantly, con-stantly, offering help, giving di-dections di-dections and boosting for us. The three uncles were Andew Alley, 127 Broadway; Wellman B. Mull's, 425 19th St., and Jack D. Fullington, 1007-B 20th St. all in Santa Monica. You parents' might drop them a line for a fine job. They were with us all the way. Kangaroo Court I keep remembering little incidents inci-dents and this I just couldn't pass up. Friday night, the evening before be-fore the championship game, we bedded the boys down about 9 p. m. with the fond hope that they would be sleeping by 10 p. m. At about 9:30 p. m. we1 could hear a commotion in the room so I quietly entered just in i time to see all 14 boys out of bed standing by a shower and the water being turned on. When they saw me they silently returned re-turned to the beds and Roger Lewis stepped out of the shower half soaked, pajamas and all. Seemed that Roger had uttered a few unnecessary words and the punishment was on. Misel, naturally na-turally was the judge, being the biggest of the lot; and alj went well with the exception of a few "time outs" which were called Ijy Sam Champerjain. |
