Show Traffic Safety Chief Issues Pedestrian Warning "Stop on red, go on green. Don't sneak through on the in-between!" in-between!" This bit of rhyming advice was given today to Utah pedestrians by Myron J. Fulrath, President, Utah Safety Council. Mr. Fulrath reminded walkers that the Signs of Life program which the Safety council Is sponsoring spon-soring this month applies to pe-Jdestrians pe-Jdestrians as well as motorists. "Too many walkers expect drivers dri-vers to accept all the responsibility responsi-bility for traffic safety," he said. "They ignore the traffic signs and signals provided for their protection, and very often their carelessness costs thorn thoir lives." The Safety Council spokesm n said that last year alone 7Wi pedestrians wore killed in traf.'k accidents'. It Is his belief that many of those persons might bo alive today if they had heeded the Signs of Life. According to Mr. Fulrath, some of the unsafe practices indulged in by those unfortunate walkers wore: crossing against the signal at intersections, crossing Intersections Inter-sections diagonally, and crossing between Intersections. "Such careless actions invite disaster," he said, and our pedestrian pe-destrian death toll will remain high as long as walkers have so little regard for their own safety." He urged all Utahns to make It a habit to obey traffic lights at Intersections' and signals at railroad crossings, to cross only at Intersections whenever possible, possi-ble, and to use crosswalks when they are provided. "Traffic signs and signals' are the pedestrian's Signs of Life," he said. "Know them and obey them!" |
