Show Delta Rabbits Outplay Opponents ToWinThirdPlaceinRegionSix The Delta Rabbits, about as smooth and well-balanced high school basketball team as any to appear in Cedar City for a number of years, won third place in Region Six and the berth in the state B tournament, in the Region Six tournament here last week end. The tournament itself also proved to be perhaps the most successful yet staged, partly because be-cause of the fine competition, partly because of a new arrangement arrange-ment adopted this year, and also because the CSU fieldhouse provided pro-vided ample room for many fans to see the games. In the past the tournament has decided only the third place team to enter the state meet from this region, but this year a region championship was determined and the three top teams each earned lovely trophies in recognition recog-nition of their accomplishments. As has been done in the past the second and third place teams of th ? Dixie and Millard divisions met in the opening night in the beginning of a play-off to determine deter-mine the tournament berth. This year, however, instead of the first right losers meeting on the second night, "just for fun," they were dropped from the meet and the two district champions tangled tan-gled for the region title and first land second place trophies. I Beavers Wallop Dixie I In the opening night the Beaver Bea-ver Beavers walloped the Dixie t Flyers 55 to 40 in the opening i game, with Raynor Pearce of jBeavr leading his team with 27 points and an excellent all-round performance. In the second game the Cedar Redmen fell before an excellent Delta team by a score of Gl to 55. The Redmen put up I a very commendable battle be-jfore be-jfore going down to defeat, but I the Flyers were outclassed except ex-cept for the first few minutes of the game. In Ihe Cedar-Delta game Win-field Win-field did some sensational shooting shoot-ing to score 10 field goals and two foul shots for 22 points to lead his team to victory, and was very able assisted by determined deter-mined and capable teammates. Moodv was close behind Winfield with 19 points. In spite of the fact that his scoring was not of the sensational type, Jerry Frame, Cedar mainstay, topped the scoring scor-ing with 24 points. The Rabbits led most of the way, holding a small lead most of the time, but the Redmen were very much in the ball game until the final minutes. A little better luck on their shots could have turned the Redmen's defeat into victory. Delta won its state tournament Most Exciting Game berth by defeating Beaver 49 to 48 in an unusually well-played and exciting game. Both teams played brilliantly and fought desperately for victory. Delta led practically all the way, and seemed to have the game won until a desperate rally in the waning minutes of the game pushed Beaver into a 49 to 48 lead with about a half minute left to play. With only 13 seconds sec-onds left Moody stepped to the foul line and calmly dropped in two perfect shots to put Delta back into the lead and into the state tournament. In the final game the Hurricane Hurri-cane Tigers, Dixie district winners, win-ners, "saved the face" of the Dixie division by taking a well-earned well-earned 51 to 39 victory from the Parowan Rams, Millard winners, to win the Region championship and i first place trophy. The first night games drew an excellent crowd, but the attendance attend-ance was overshadowed the second sec-ond night when the largest crowd ever to file into the field-house field-house for a sports event filled every seat and left many spectators specta-tors standing on the stairs at the end of the floor to see the games. |
