There are many important issues like education, the environment and economic growth that are just not being addressed," she said. ERCELL SELL ' 'All can share food tax. ' ' By JUDY JENSEN Editor Davis County voters went to the polls last week to elect a new slate ' of politicians to represent their con-' con-' stituents. An unexpected tide of Democratic voters combined with dissident Republicans to unseat two Davis County legislative incumbents, in-cumbents, elect a Democrat to the previously all -Republic an county commission and hand Republican Congressman James Hansen a less-than-expected margin of victory. In the five races where Democrats opposed Republicans, the GOP won only one. The only Republican to beat a Democrat in Davis County was Layton businessman busi-nessman Kevin Gam. For the Republican party the losses were unexpected. According to county Republican vice-chairwoman Laura Graham, '"Twenty- five percent of the voters ' cast an anu-anything ballot. People were upset and angry and decided to lash outand they lashed out at Republicans since we were viewed as being in control." Many of the Democratic winners were pleasantly surprised by their victory. Davis County voters joined those in 28 of the state's 29 counties in rejecting re-jecting the highly publicized in-1 in-1 itiative to remove sales tax on food. The initiative was turned down by : 55 percent of Davis County voters. We asked Davis County residents if they were surprised by any of the : election results, and if they were satisfied with the winners. ! For Carolyn Rodgers there were no surprises. "I didn't follow it all that closely. Most of those I voted for were elected,' she said. For 1 Rodgers the school board vote was the most important. "The school ! board affects the lives of our kids, and that is the most important issue : for me," she said. Ercell Sell agreed that there were : no surprises in the election results. ' He said he thought those candidates ' who won would win. For him the : most important vote was on the food tax initiative. "Food tax is a tax we can all share," he said. "I think the biggest surprise is the fact that Orton won in the third district congressional race," said ' Dave Williams. He said he was also surprised by the results in the ' Salt Lake County Commission. "In Davis County all of my choices ' won," he said. He added that the food tax initiative was to him the most important issue in the election, r "and that went my way too," said Williams. "Initiative A was the most important im-portant vote," said David Smith. "I'm glad it was defeated. If people are stupid enough to believe that government is going to cut back because they have less money, they're sadly mistaken. The whole idea was silly. People should not be so naive as to think something would be done that would be good for the common man." The only disappointment for Dave Markisich was that Genevieve Atwood did not win in her bid against Wayne Owens. "I wondered why Atwood didn't win. I was disappointed about that. I think it would have been a change of pace," he said. On a local level, Beard said he was most pleased with J.D Holbrook's win for the county commission seat. I Lucy Jordan said she was "pleasantly surprised" by the election elec-tion results. "I'm a Democrat and I thought the fact that Orton won was great. J.D. Holbrook's win was a |
