Show Braves, 'Cats and Darts meet early end in v-ball tourney described her team as a fighting team that hates to lose. The state tournament proved the Darts were just that. Davis came from behind to beat Alta in two games Thursday night. The win qualified to face the Brighton Bengals in consolation bracket competition at Mountain View Hign Saturday morning. The Darts jumped to an impressive im-pressive 15-8 first-game victory over the Bengals; then Brighton went to work winning the next two games 15-11, 15-11. BOUNTIFUL-After losing to the Bear River Bears Friday, the Braves returned to West High later that evening hoping to re-establish their winning ways at Payson High's expense. Payson, however, had other ideas. When the dust cleared two games later, the Braves' playoff action would have to wait another year; Payson won 15-9, 16-4. Bountiful coach Jill Avery said later that the Braves struggled mentally men-tally against Payson. "They were close games, but we weren't there mentally," said Avery. "Our loss earlier that day took a lot out of us emotionally, and we weren't as tough as we could have been. "Payson was a scrappy team. They bring a lot of balls back defensively. Our hitting game was out of sync. Volleyball is a mental sport, and we struggled mentally. Bountiful will graduate four seniors this year but is still looking forward to next season's competition. competi-tion. "Our junior varsity team only lost one season match this year," added Avery. "They play well together. We have a strong group of juniors who will be seniors next year. WOODS CROSS-In the Wildcats' case, it was pretty much the luck of the draw (or lack thereof) that kept Woods Cross L from advancing in the tournament. Woods Cross' third place seeding pitted the 'Cats against Skyview Friday afternoon in first round competition, a team that gave the eventual state-champion Springville a three-game run for its money. The Wildcats lost in three and faced the Emery Spartans who eventually won the consolation bracket. Wildcat coach Debbie Peel felt good about her team's performance in spite of the loss. "I feel OK about the way we played. The other team just played well. We couldn't pull it off," explained ex-plained Peel. "Even though we lost, we did end the season on a positive note. There were a few tears, the girls wanted more, but next year's another an-other year. ' According to Peel, junior Mindy Kirkham kept the Wildcats alive with her consistent play. "Mindy led the team in kills and anchored our back row. She made very few mistakes,' said Peel. Senior setter Noel Goodrich also had a characteristically consistent tournament showing contributing her steady sets and strong front row play, strong sets and Peel added that the Wildcats' chances next season look promising. Not only will Kirkham return, but Woods Cross will return a host of 'Cat netters that saw varsity playing time this season. DAVIS-With guts and determination, deter-mination, The fourth place Darts went farther than any other south Davis team in state tourney action.
