Show Braves ready for Bears What can Bountiful High look for from the Bear River Bears in Friday's state 3A championship? For one thing, perhaps the state's best running back. Bear River, a team which lost its opener at Jordan but has since run off 11 straight wins, boasts two fine backs in number 34 Jared Bumham and number 24 Brian Theurer. Bumham is the workhorse while Theurer is a bit smaller and sleeker, and resembles Bountiful's own Mason Jacobs in terms of his running style. The Bears will also throw to both of those backs, as quarterback Shawn Fuhriman completed five passes to them for 107 yards in last Saturday's semifinal win over Spanish Fork. Fuhriman also likes to throw to Dust in Porritt, who will line up in both the backfield and in the slot. Against the Dons, Porritt completed com-pleted a halfback option pass to Fuhriman for 48 yards, but the Bears are not a team which traditionally uses a lot of gadget plays. Halfback Gerry Christensen (35) will also see some action, while the defensive standouts are tackle Trinity Harrell (77) and linebacker Ryan Goodliffe (46). Clay Choumos does the placekicking and punting pun-ting for the Bears. Coach Mike Rosky does have one advantage going for him against most opponents. The Bears do not use a number of players both ways, allowing Bear River to be a bit more rested than some of its opponents. That clearly was the case last Saturday against Spanish Fork, a team Bear River beat by stopping a last-second two-point conversion attempt by the Dons that would have forced an overtime. 1 " " |
