Show McGruff celebrates tenth anniversary By JAMS CARTER McGruff, the crime dog, recently celebrated his tenth birthday. He is a friend of law enforcement and is a deterrent to crime. Providing help for kids in neighborhoods in an emergency or scary situations, McGruff House is a locally operated program. Standardized Stan-dardized symbols are used throughout the United States so that children moving interstate or traveling travel-ing through the country can recognize recog-nize a McGruff House anywhere. It is a service provided by the community, including local law enforcement, en-forcement, a school or school system and a community organization organiza-tion such as Neighborhood Watch. The program is a cooperative effort tailored to meet local needs and conditions. A nationwide program, McGruff House represents a partnership 'among communities, state government govern-ment and a national organization. Providing a sense of security and a source of emergency aid, McGruff House is not an escort service or a guarantee of safety, but it is a place for appropriate short-term help by an adult for a child. Beginning in 1988, McGruff Truck is an extension of McGruff House. It is a partnership between Mountain Fuel and the Utah Council Coun-cil for Crime Prevention. It uses decals picturing McGruff to identify iden-tify Mountain Fuel, U.S. West and Utah Power vehicles and their drivers as sources of help. The McGruff driver does not act as a policemen or a paramedic, but calls for help. A child can get help from a McGruff Truck by jumping up and down and waving both arms in the air and yelling. Children should never run into the street to get help. McGruff visits schools with "Officer Friendly," and videos are shown to train children what to look for and how to get help. i I m- - "2 '.aJhw v. -' O.
