The paper mache masks were made by 1 15 sixth graders in a 4-step process that required the students to spend two mornings in the all-purpose room. The workshop was under the direction of Patricia Stephen, curator cura-tor at the art center. Last year, the sixth grade teachers (Carolyn Adams, Jo Lyn Baldwin, Mickey Murphy, Vicki Smith) asked Stephen if she would guide all the sixth graders (70 students) through the steps in making a mask. The project went so well it was decided to do it again this year. This is a very inexpensive project which requires only four items: a blown-up balloon, some old newspapers, a little flour and water. The final step is decorating the masks, which is when the individual creativity comes forth. It is during this step when each mask becomes unique in structure and decoration. The masks are decorated with poster paint, scraps of fabric, colored paper and all sorts of odds and ends. According to teacher, Vicki Smith, this year's finished products are "ghoulish creatures of all kinds." They will be on display in the school halls for several weeks. .S- ' '- -fK' ' 'ft ' ' ,..
