Usually, the nail of the big toe is involved, although the other nails can also become ingrown. Due to improper im-proper cuting, short or narrow shoes, foot imbalance, etc., the nail plate may curve causing the edge to press and cut into the tissue. Bacteria can then enter and a painful, infected ingrown toe nail results. Antibiotics and soaking can be helpful, but until the offending portion of the nail is removed it con-tiues con-tiues to be a source of irritation. Some over the counter medications will also give temporary relief, but are not a permanent solution. If the curvature and shape of the nail result in repeated infections and pain, an office procedure can be used to remove that portion of the nail causing the problem and prevent it from growing back. 820 W.
