Show Gold medal winner If ' ' I - -j - : The Region Ten Junior Olympics Finals Track Meet sponsored by The Athletics Congress (TAC) was held July 14-16 at Highland High School in Salt Lake City. Competition was from among the top three finishers in separate state championship track meets held previously pre-viously in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Colora-do, New Mexico, and the Border (El Paso) urea of Texas. Philip Tate, 14, of Bountiful, won first place gold medals in the 200 meter hurdles and the pentathlon (multiple events). His performance in the 200 meter hurdles was 27. 17 seconds, a new Utah state record for his age group; beating the old record by .04 seconds. In the penthalon, Philip earned 2650 total combined points. From among the penthalon athletes, Philip Phi-lip finished first place in the 100 meter hurdles, shot put, long jump, and 1500 meter run, and finished second in the high jump with a new personal record of 5'7-y4", one inch short of his own height. Philip also earned a second place silver medal in the 100 meter hurdles hur-dles with a time of 15.30 at the Region Re-gion Ten track meet. Philip's performance at the Region Re-gion Ten Track Meet gives him an PHILIP TATE invitation to compete in these events at the National Finals Junior Olympics Track Meet to be held July 26-3 1 at the Percy Beard Track Stadium on the campus of the University Uni-versity of Florida in Gainsville, Fla. He left July 25 for Gainsville. Philip is a member of the Bountiful Flyers Track Club under the direction direc-tion of head coach, Lynn Dubois. |
