Show Ml EXPERIMENT BESUtRME TOLD LOGAN", March S. A recent Issue of the Journal of Agricultural Research contains an article reporting the results of one phase of the research work on alkali which is being conducted by Dr. F. S. Harris and D. W. Pittman of the Utah experiment station. The work, which was done in the laboratories of j the station, was undertaken to deter- ; mine the quantity of salts that prohibit j the growth of crops and whether or not1 tiiis varied with different salts and soils, containing different amounts of water J and humus. I More than 1 2. f00 tumblers containing various soils were prepared, to wh'cli , were added different quantities of vari- I ous alkalis. Jn these tumblers various ; crops were planted and daily notes taken on the number of plants up and other i observable data. At the end of twenty- j one days a careful harvest was made . and the dry matter produced in each , tumbler determined and recorded. A 1 very interesting feature of the article is ; g the twenty-seven diagrams prepared to ' 5 show in a concrete form the number of ' plants up and the dry matter produced B In twenty-one days under tiie various conditions. 1 The practical conclusions derived from 5 the work, which should be of especial 1 interest to the farmers of the arid west, R where alkali Is one of the greatest prob- lams, are stated by the authors as fol- lows: 1 "(1) Loam soils and soils with a high H water-holding capacity may be success- 1 fully farmed at a higher alkali content j than others. "(2) Soils In which alkali reduces crop yields should be kept as moist as is compatible com-patible with good plant growth. j "O"! Manure, or other organic matter, i should be beneficial to alkali soils, especially es-pecially those high in carbonates." Water Bond Issue Carries. PRICE, March 8. By a vote of 221 to I 11 Price taxpayers Saturday voted for the H 1170,000 bond issue for obtaining water H from Colton springs. Scores of firms have already asked for -a chance to buy the bonds and they will be put on the market without delay. Work will probably begin on a pipe line from Colton to a new cement reservoir in less than ninety days and It is expected ex-pected that the pure water will be delivered deliv-ered in the mains of the city by Septem- her 1. |
