Only those who attended the regular meeting of the Ladles' Literary club on Friday afternoon have any idea of the very splendid programme rendered under the direction of Mrs. Charles G. Flummer. It was nn afternoon with "Mendelssohn and His Oratorios." and not only did Mrs. Plummcr give an In-EB In-EB Bplrlng review of the life of the great Kj composer and his work, but a number B of selections from the grand oratorios K of "St. Paul" ond "Elijah" were given K by Mrs. Plummer, assisted by MIbs H Agatha Berkhoe. Mrs. Alfred S. Peters, Mrs. William A. Wetzel I. Miss Edna K Cohn, Miss Amy Osborne. Fred Gra-BP Gra-BP .ham and Mr. Copley. Too much cannot Jbe said in praise of these, especially of the solo work of Mrs. Plummer, Mrs. fc2 Peters, Miss Borkhoel. Mr. Graham and KK Mr. Copley, Mrs. W. F. Loomls was gu the accompanist of the afternoon, and EH she shared equally with the soloists the Hi honors of the very successful and dc-Mf dc-Mf " llghtful programme. The society has already turned In something over 54000 to the church building fund. Women's Clubs and the Exposition. Not ouly may club, women from all over the country be sure of an official' welcome and of a beautiful hospitality when they visit St. Louis In May, for tho biennial of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, but all through the season of the great fair women and girls will be assisted, through St. Louis women's clubs; to find suitable boarding places. These clubs, we learn from Miss Dawes, one of the board of lady managers, have appointed agencies In different parts of the city for the purpose of carrying out this most excellent ex-cellent intention, and the results are sure to be too great, loo satisfactory, to be enumerated in a brief space. There is always the fear entertained by many women visitors to one of these big affairs af-fairs that an unpleasant crowding in disagreeable quarters may be the experience ex-perience of those with limited means, and in many Instances these fears have doubtless been realized. But If women's clubs are going to lake a hand In changing all this we arc inclined to think such fears may be banished as regards the Louisiana Purchase Exdo-sltlon. Exdo-sltlon. Gilchrist, for many years one of Salt Lake's moat prominent promi-nent clubwomen and who was a tower of strength to the club movement in this city In the early days, will leave the first of May for Illinois to make her home with a brother. Mrs, Gilchrist will be greatly missed by a very wide circle of friends, all of whom will wish for her the greatest happiness in her new home. o The regular meeting of the Council of Jewish Women will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the B. B. club-rooms. club-rooms. Owing to tho Illness of Mm Kate Bridewell-Anderson, the regular meting met-ing of the Daughters of the Confederacy was postponed until April lHth, and will bo held at 705 East Second South street. - During the week beginning April Sth i the P. Frnnken has been added to the art committee of the Utah Federation of Women's Clubs, and that of Mrs. Harry Ganz, programme pro-gramme committee. Mrs. Chester E. Coulter of Ogdtn will take, part In the discussion of the subjects sub-jects on household economics at the biennial convention of the Federation at St. Louis. 4 At the annual meeting of St. Mark's guild the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Mrs. W. II, Bird, president; Mrs. George Y. Wallace, vice-president; Mrs. F L. Oswald, treasurer; Mrs. F. C. Snyder, secretary. During the past year the guild has raited ?C00 for tho building fund of the ccthedral. Of Interest to Club Women. With the exception of 'Charlotte Emerson Em-erson Brown, the ilrst president of the I General Federation of Women's Clubs?. Mrs. Charles S. Dennlson, the present presiding officer, will be tho only president presi-dent who has not acted a second term. u o Miss Jane Addams of Hull House, Chicago, Is much Interested in the peace movement. She Is now at work on a book which will present cortaln new aspects of the question. Miss Addams Ad-dams will bo one of the principal speakers at the international peace convention, con-vention, to be held in Boston In October, and Is co-operating with Chicago Chi-cago members of the executive committee commit-tee of the congress in arranging a series of peace meetings In Chicago, to follow the Boston conference. Tho Michigan State Federation has given to the University of Michigan $3000 for a. woman's scholarship. o o Forty-three State federations arc now afnilated with the General Federation. Federa-tion. Tho Florida State Federation lately held its ninth annual convention at Jacksonville. The Woman's club of that city has a new clubhouse of which It Is very proud, and the federation was entertained there. Mrs. Denlson, president presi-dent of the general federation, was present. The Florida federation Includes In-cludes nineteen clubs, sixteen of which were represented. The work done Is largely educational, tho great need of schools and libraries being felt in nearly all Southern States. Other lines of work carried on are Improving and building roads, planting trees, establishing establish-ing libraries, preserving the birds, and encouraging university extension. |
