FIGHT FOR GRADE ON NORTH MAIN About forty of tho resident property-owners property-owners on North Main street were present at the meeting of the Engineering Engineer-ing and Street committees, which met in the Council chamber yesterday afternoon after-noon for the purpose of considering the grade of tho street The grado as established es-tablished proposes to cut the street down about twenty-seven feet at Second Sec-ond North street the top of the hill. This would make a grade of 10 por cent up from First North street, but the residents on the east side of the street object to such a deep cut on the ground that it would depreciate the value of their property. They Insist on a grado of zv.i or 12 per cent, which would not necessitate such a deep cut at the top of the hill. City Engineer Snow is in favor of the 10 per cent grado for the street, but says a steeper grade could be established estab-lished for the sidewalk on the east side so as not to disturb the abutting walls that have already been built by somo of the residents. A steeper grado than 10 per cent he Hays would be Impracticable for the street from an engineering standpoint It is held that it would be dangerous to operate electric cara on a grade greater than 10 per cent There was, however, considerable difference of opinion upon this point, and some of tho east sldo property-owners producea letters from engineers in other cities to the effect that electric cars could be operated with safety on streets of short distance with grades as steep as 12 and 13, per cent. Tho members of the committees heard arguments on both sides and then took the matter under advisement until Monday evening at which time they will submit a report to the City CounclL Money Makes the Mare- Go, And It is a horse on you If you don't Invest eome of It in spring haberdashery. haber-dashery.
