Show BUSINESS, TRADE, AND FINANCE. Tho week sees tho opening of the spring, In earnest the storms are apparently ap-parently over, nnd the weather Is becoming be-coming warm. Grass is growing well and showing up beautifully green and fresh. The leaves on rose bushes are coming out, and the signs of coming vegetation aro unmistakable. The moisture has been much more than average, av-erage, and the Indications for a good agricultural year were never better and seldom so good. The range has benefited bene-fited spiendldly by the recent copious precipitation. , The result of these excellent prospects for farm and range is, that all forms of business throughout the State are In excellent ex-cellent position; the farmers will be nblo to buy freely, as their crops will produce abundantly. Another good feature of the situation is the report that tho coal mines of Carbon county are not likely to bo in any way interfered with by the strike. A large number of strikers are In camp in the vicinity of tho various mines, in the hope that the laborers who have taken ta-ken their placeB therein will be called away to their spring work on the farms. But, from all reports, tho miners now at work In those mines are well content, con-tent, and will remain at work. Besides, with the oncoming of warm weather the demand for coal will be lighter. The metal mines aro producing at their maximum rate: they will easily record an output this year valued at twenty-five million dollars, the mark wo have set for them from the first of the year; probably considerably more. The .production for March ranged close to three million dollars, and this month it is likely that St will reach fully that figure. In the reduction works, the constant addition of appliances for more perfect and extensive capacity has been a most gratifying feature. There Is a constant gain In this line, and although the smelters smel-ters have done excellent work all along, their enterprising managers are not content with that, but they are constantly con-stantly reaching out for more ore and moro material of all sorts, and constantly con-stantly adding to their means of ore treatment, so as to meet all requirements require-ments and make this one of the greatest great-est ore reduction centers In the world. The roasting plant of the United States Mining company is to be in operation by July, and Its handling of lead ores will be a material addition to the reduction reduc-tion facilities of the valley. Nothing is changed In the exceedingly bright railroad situation except for the better!. The San Pedro road (tho Salt Lake route) Is being pushed with commendable com-mendable diligence and activity. It bids fair to be a welcome" surprise to the people of tho State by getting through trains In operation much before the time set for the completion of the road, this by track privileges on track already al-ready laid and in use by another company. com-pany. The Moffat lino (the Denver & Northwestern) North-western) Is being pushed with vigor. It will undoubtedly have a very active season this ensuing spring and summer. Its line will be carried this side of the iraln range, but on a temporary track. This, however, will afford tourists an opportunity to see some of the finest scenery on tbo continental divide, and tho company is a strong bidder for that business. The Important announcement is made In this morning's dispatches that contracts for the completion of this r-n,r ( n Go 1 T.olrrv l-.r ...111 U lk The Western Pacific- we do not hear as much of as we shall later on. Its line is fully surveyed through from San Francisco to this city, and the company ly strengthening Itself and pushing work on the western end with zeal and success. Tho road will cross tho Sierras Sier-ras at Beckwlth Pass, will cross the Southern Pacific in the vicinity of Wadsworth. and will enter this city via the south shore of the lake. Trado and business in this city show good features; the excellent conditions of the agricultural, range, and mining interests cannot fall to mako a good year financially. Tho merchants aro doing well with the opening of spring trade, and the demand Is improving dally. The activity In transactions is manifest in the fact that the bank clearances for the wcek'wero fully up to -those of tho corresponding week last year. The realty market Is a special feature just now, as well as tho building operations opera-tions present and prospective. The real estate ugents arc especlaly active, and report brisk demand at fair prices, with many sales. The builders are well occupied; oc-cupied; houses aro being erected In goodly numbers and of desirable proportions pro-portions and conveniences in all parts of the oily. The building season has fairly becun, and It Is likely to be the best the city has ever known. The wool-buying operations arc In full activity. Agents are seeking for lleecea, and at good prices. The competition is brisk, and with a steady to firm market in the Fast( the liockmasters are atout to reap a rich harvest. The shearing has alreud begun in some sections, but on account of the backward season and the cold storms, the busy time has not yet come. But this by no means pro-vents pro-vents the activity of buyers, and contracts con-tracts for delivery of wool are being entered en-tered into quite generally. The amount of money to bo paid for wool In the region re-gion of which this city Is .the center and disbursing point will easily reach three million dollar?. In the country at large, the optimism which Is justly felt in this State is not so apparent. Tho labor troubles hurt the progress of Industry, and the heavy storms and damaging floods are serious handicaps. Dun reports commercial conditions as somewhat improved during tho week, but much moro la to be desired. The best news of the week Is the settlement of many labor controversies, and the resumption of work ponding arbitration. Improvement In tho Iron ' and steel trade is olTset by losses in other directions. direc-tions. Business failures show a marked decreape. Bradstrect reports the events of the week favorable for the most part. Weather conditions havo Improved, with, wholesale and Jobbing trado bettered bet-tered In tone. The International Mercantilo Agency reports general trade activity throughout through-out Western and Southwestern territory, terri-tory, with buyers every whero cautious. The bank clearances of the week show a decrease inNcw York, compared with the corresponding week last year of 11.7 per cent, which Is a material betterment bet-terment compared with most of tho recent re-cent weeka. The banks outside of New York show an increase in clearances of. 1.2 per cent, and the aggregate for all Is a decrease of S.7 per cent, a material Improvement over any report for tho past six months or more. The New York bank statement, issued yesterday, showed a heavy increaso in loans and a yet heavier increase in deposits, de-posits, with other Items having comparatively com-paratively small differences. The market mar-ket hardened on its publication, but the favorable effect soon passed away, and the market became lifeless, as it has been most of tho week. |
