Early In tho morning tho Hcroros attempted at-tempted to surround and cut oft tho rearguard rear-guard of MaJ. von Ghisenapp'a force, consisting con-sisting of Fisher's company, which was numerous, well armed and partly mounted. mount-ed. TI10 enemy opened a vigorous fire, but was repulsed after a light lasting thrco and a half hours, the rearguard having been reinforced by Count Brockdorff'a conpany and First Lieut Manshold's artillery. Tho enemy were pursued for an hour but escaped, leaving ilfty-two of tholr number dead. In the meantime the head of tho column, under Liber, had a Bharp fight lasting an hour. The German losses woro: Lieut. Noerr, four non-commissioned officers and twenty-eight privates killed, and Llout. Hlldebrand, four non-commlssloncd officers of-ficers and eleven men wounded. Tho artillery action was brilliant The Germans suffered from want of serviceable service-able horses, having only twenty-one animals ani-mals capable of scouting. An official account of the cngagoraont with tho Horcros says ninety-two of tho enemy's dead were counted. Col. Loutwln, Governor of Gorman Southwest Africa, announces that tho German force left Okahandja April 7th for OtJOBafu. The North German Gazette surmises that decisive fighting will be announced. Otjosofu Is only soventeen miles cast of Okahandja. The enemy has a strong position at Onganjlra, a short dlstanco to the eastward of the latter place. |
