Show MONSTER MODEL WHALE TAKEN TO THE FAIR Reaches St. Louis in Several Sections and Is Fine Specimen of Curator's Skill. ST. LOUIS, April 9. Whales do not often venture so far inland as St. Louis, but one from the National museum at Washington has Just arrived at the World's fair and is being installed In the Government building. This monster of the deep is a cleverly constructed model prepared by Prof. True, curator of zoology at the National Na-tional museum." It was shipped in sections sec-tions and the several crates filled a large flat-car, which had to be roofed over to prevent the elements from injuring in-juring the exhibit in transit. Switchmen, freight handlers, draymen dray-men and shipping clerks about the exposition ex-position grounds little imagined, when the big exhibit was unloaded, what the boxes contained, and it was not known that the whale had arrived until the work of unpacking began. The head occupied one box, the two lllppers another, the sides of the body filled two crates and the tall still another. an-other. Every inch of space in the car which brought it from Washington to St. Louis was utilized. But If the berth was large there Is more wonder that such a creature, even after being divided di-vided Into pieces, could have confined Itself to a single railroad car when its mammoth proportions were viewed after St had assumed shape in the exhibit ex-hibit building Prof. True was eight months in preparing pre-paring this exhibit and It is one of the big attractions furnished by the National Na-tional museum. The real whale was carefully studied and the model Is said to be true to life. |
