Show LeeEi tot Haloes: By DAVE WIGHAM With August just around the corner the high school athletes are starting to think about the coming football year. And in the area, Davis County, there is a lot of talent on the horizon. EACH AND every school has a standout returning from last year's football program, including the new child, Woods Cross, who jump into the fire of varsity action this year. Clearfield for example returns re-turns their quarterback Brian Johnson. Brian was considered con-sidered a top notch signal caller last year as a junior and will be counted on heavily in this his senior year. A veteran quarterback is a key to a high school program. ASIDE FROM being the field general on offense, Brian also anchors a stubborn Falcon defense from his linebacker spot. Layton has a couple of big horses in running backs Maurice Turner and tackle Chuck Ehin. Maurice has the speed needed to go outside and the power to run up the middle. Turner has the potential po-tential to be one of the top running backs in the state this year. CHUCK EHIN, the 6'4" giant, was one of very few sophomores to ever letter in football as a sophomore. This year as a junior, he could be awesome. Viewmont returns their two top quarterbacks from last year, Tim Egan and Kevin Hess. It's likely that Coach JU1IC.J Will 3WIll.ll UlUT Ul II1CI1I to another position to utilize their full potential. Hess probably saw more playing time and has been working hard on his passing, while Egan will probably be moved to a receiver spot. DAVIS LOSES a lot of their state championship squad but with the likes of Ryan Hill returning, the Darts could be tough again as always. As one of the Dart coaches mentioned, "Ryan could be the best quarterback in the state next year if he wants to." Hill can throw the ball and likes to run with it as well, and in that double wing offense, that spells trouble. BOUNTIFL'L'S Chris Davies saw limited action as a quarterback last season but he saw enough action to impress Coach Waite. Davies could be in for a fight for the starting spot though as junior Lyn Muir could battle the senior for the signal calling honors. On defense the Braves return re-turn the likes of Larry Hale and Scot Kinear. , WOODS CROSS isn't without their star either, as one of the best all around athletes in the area, Jeff Ostler, will be at the Wildcat school. A shoulder operation has been healing for all summer and word is that Jeff is ready to go, come football. A top notch running back this little speedster could surprise quite a few people, come football season. |
