Show Layton, Viewmont Meet In American Legion B0 Action This coming Saturday night at Davis High, July 16, the Layton and Viewmont American Legion teams will square off in a league battle. THE VIKING team is currently leading the league with a perfect 5-0 record, while the Layton group has had its problems and is currently at 3-1 Like many of the Legion teams, the Layton squad has had problems in getting their players to all the games. Either injuries, vacations or work schedules have played a major role in the Layton record. WITH pitchers like Pat Benton and Bob Payne around, the Viking teams and coaches realize the potential the Layton team possesses. If and when all Jhe players are at the game, then the Lancer team is one of the best in the state. Last week the Viewmont team participated in a tournament tour-nament in Salt Lake City. The Vikes went winless in three outings in the four-day event. The Viewmont squad lost games to Cottonwood 10-2, West 5-2, and Grand Junction, Colorado 9-6. COACH LEE Lalli expressed two reasons for the Vike failure to win, injuries and tough competition. "When you play the good teams and you're not at your best then you're in trouble." The Vikings had several players playing in unfamiliar positions due to injuries. First of all shortstop Steve Neilsen has a bad shoulder and left-fielder Pat Fiegelsen has a sore arm. This meant Kevin Walker played shortstop, short-stop, Kevin did a commendable commenda-ble job but still showed signs of uneasiness. COACH LALLI pointed out that the Vikes received good pitching in the tournament but again mental and physical errors cost them the games. All in all the coach noted that they had three bad innings in the tournament and against good teams that's all it takes. Hitters like Brian Bown, Court Wilkins, Mark Lalli and Mark Garn will have their hands full Saturday night, starting at 8 p.m. when they face either Benton or Payne. THE Automotive teams are just finishing their regular season and head into tournament tour-nament action beginning July 30. Viewmont is in second place in the city division with a 11-4 record while the Bountiful Boun-tiful team is 9-5 in the same division. f |
