Show Tigers lose two in region play "Saturday was just an overall rotten game," sighed Barnes. "We shot 27 percent from the field, with short shots," said Barnes. "I'll bet we missed 10 layups. They were shooting pretty good." ' The Tigers trailed by 11 at the half and never really threatened from the first quarter on. Escalante outrebounded Milford and controlled the inside to take control of the game and move to the win. The Milford Tigers successfully controlled the tempo of the game against Gunnison Friday, but Gunnison controlled the scoreboard anyway and came away with a 50-41 victory in Rgion 12 hoop action and the Tigers dropped a ten-point affair 58-48 Saturday to Escalante. "We tried to control the tempo," said Tiger coach Kevin Barnes, referring to the Gunnison game. "We didn't want to get into a runing game with them. They've been running away with games. It worked during most of the game." MHS trailed by only six at the half and closed the gap to five with only several minutes to play. At that point, Milford was forced to foul and Gunnison converted from the line to ice the win. Milford started the second half with a bang and scored eight straight points before the Tigers were able to get things on track. The difference in the game was at the foul line. Gunnison had 31 free throw attempts and converted on 20 of those. Milford only went to the line 11 times and sank 7 of those. "We just didn't get to the foul line as much as they did," said Barnes. The Tiger coach felt pretty good about his team's play, despite the loss. "We played pretty well," explained Barnes. Milford hit several more field goals then did Gunnison but it was the free throw difference that mattered. Two Tiger starters, Darryl Mooddy and Blair Coon, were both unable to play against Gunnison because of injuries. Sophomores John Dotson and Mark Yardley filled-in for the two hurt players and performed very well. Yardley hit for eight points and Dotson grabbed six rebounds. Chad Hardy was high scorer for Milford with 12 points and Ephie Tolman added 10. Robbie Bolton hit for 8, along with Yardley's 8. Milford ran into foul trouble late in the contest as Hardy, Tolman and Dotson all fouled out. Against Escalante, Tolman almost single-handedly kept Milford close. He hit for 21 points and Hardy hit for 10. The Tigers as a team shot a frigid 27 percent on the night, a percentage that gave Barnes nightmares. |
