Show Rams 'super tentative9 Beavers defeat Mains 53-42 By MIKE CANNON Sports Writer PAROWAN The Beaver Beavers slapped the Parowan Rams 53-42 here Friday to move to 1-0 in Region 12 play while the Rams are 0-1 in region play following the sour loss. The Beavers, in turn, were dumped by Valley 56-41 Saturday in a non-league game. For the Rams, it was a case of being super tentative Friday while Beaver came into the game with confidence and took control. "I can't figure out why we were so nervous," said Ram coach Mark Heppler. "We were just real tentative a about shooting. We just didn't play well." Parowan didn't look like the same team that has played with confidence in their previous four opening contests, including several tight games. "We just choked," said Heppler. "We missed 13 free throws again. We had our chances and we just couldn't do it." On the Beaver side of things, coach Calvin Albrecht was naturally pleased with the game's outcome and felt defense made the difference. "The key to the game was our defense," said Albrecht. "They didn't get too many good shots, I felt. We wanted to shut-off their size and inside game." Kenny Stoker had an outstanding game for the Beavers, hitting for 20 points, dominating the inside and controlling the boards. "The big kid (Stoker) really hurt us," moaned Heppler. "We shut down who we wanted to." The Rams wanted to shut down the Beaver guards and forward Steve Hutchings, the players who have" done the bulk of the scoring for Beaver this season. They were successful in doing just that but Stoker took over inside and Parowan missed some key shots. Albrecht felt he had a balanced attack and Friday's game proved just that. "We've got five or six guys who can do the job," said Albrecht. With Beaver's outside game shut-down, they compensated and went inside. "We just didn't play well," said Heppler. "The kids just were really tight. We did get some good ball movement in the second half but we didn't take the shots." Beaver did an effective job of slowing down the Ram's running game Friday. Parowan has looked to run all season and has utilized most of their squad in wearing down opposing teams. They weren't able to do that against the Beavers. "The couple of times we did get out and run we got layups or easy baskets," said Heppler. In addition to Stoker's 20 points for Beaver, Robbie Eyre netted 13, including 11 from the foul line, Thane Marshall added 7 and Chris Branvall hit for 5. For Parowan, Doug Rogerson and Kelly Orton both had 13 and Wade Adams contributed with 5. The Rams were only 4-17 from the field in the first half and shot poorly from the field throughout the contest. Beaver was whistled with 20 fouls and Parowan had 19 called on them so the foul situation was fairly even. On Saturday, Beaver dropped a game to the Valley Mustangs by a 15-point margin, 56-41. The game was actually closer than the final tally indicated. "We played with a lot of hustle but couldn't execute well," said Albrecht. "We were really inconsistent." At the end of the first quarter, Beaver trailed 15-13 and the halftime score was a tight 24-22 for Valley. The Mustangs pulled away and hit some foul shots at the end to extend their lead. For Beaver, Robbie Eyre had 15 points, Thane Marshall hit 9 and Donnie Roberts netted 6.
