Show B-ball tourney planned CEDAR CITY Host Southern Utah State College will tangle with Ricks College in the first round of the New Year Classic women's basketball tournament in Cedar City January 1-2. The other first round game will pit Dixie College against Snow College in the tournament opener at 6 p.m. New Years Day. SUSC and Ricks play at 8 p.m. All games will be played in War Memorial Fieldhouse on campus. The second day of the tournament will see first day losers meet at 3 p.m. First day winners will play for the tournament title at 5 p.m. The early ' schedule for the second day of the tournament was arranged to allow a SUSC men's game later that evening. Last year the Thunderbird women won their first round game against Dixie, but fell in the finals to a strong Mesa Community College team, 78-43. Dixie finished third and Snow fourth in last year's cldssic "It's difficult this early to know how good everybody's going to be," Joy Peterson, SUSC coach, indicates. "We do know, however, that year in and year out Ricks has a strong program and that both Dixie and Snow have fielded good women's teams in the past." Admission will be $1 per day for students and $1.50 per day for adults. No seats will be reserved. ' In the last three years, SUSC has been in the title game. In 1980, the T-Birds T-Birds whipped Snow, 79-59 79-59 for the championship. The year before that, SUSC defeated Dixie, 91-64 91-64 for the title. "We hope to have had enough time together by ,the time the Classic comes around to start to play to our potential," Peterson says. ' |
