Show in 2-A StfGtf Tournament One point by Grantsville High School broke a three-way tie for second place in Region Nine, Friday and gave Morgan and Union High School spots in the Class 2-A State Tournament at Brigham Young University, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Morgan, Union and Lehi were tied for second place in Region Nine going into the final round of league action. Wasatch had clinched the first place title, and if all three second place teams won or lost a playoff would be needed. The Union Cougars toppled In-termountain, In-termountain, 90 to 67, and Morgan downed Wasatch, 71 to 63. Wasatch has suffered two losses to Morgan. Union and Morgan gained a tie for the final two positions from Region Nine in the state meet when Grantsville knocked Lehi out of a second place tie due to a 58 to 57 triumph in double overtime. Morgan called heads in the coin flip with Union for second place and the coin turned up heads. Morgan will compete in the state meet as the second place team and Union will be the third ' place team from Region Nine. Wasatch placed first at 8-2. Union and Morgan tied for second at 6-4. Lehi placed fourth at 5-5 and Grantsville nabbed fifth at 4-6. Tntermountain placed sixth at 1-9. The Union Cougars will battle Richfield Rich-field in the Class 2-A State Tournament, Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Wasatch will take on Manti. Union will battle Wasatch or Manti on Friday. Emery will take on South Sevier and Millard will battle Morgan. Richfield is the first place team from Region Eight. They have been ranked either number one or number two by the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News for most of the year in polls. The Wildcats' main player is Kirk Pendleton, Pen-dleton, a 6'4" forward-center, who has been averaging 20 points per ballgame. He scored 25 points in Richfield's 68-54 victory Friday over Manti. "Richfield has a quick team. They have been scoring from 65 to 70 points per ball game. They have 6'3", 6'1" forwards; 6'4" center and 6' guards. They are a fast break club and they play agressive man to man defense," stated Union High School hoop coach. Brad Monks. Union was defeated by the Wildcats in Richfield, 91 to 72, last December. Neilson scored 23 points for Union against Richfield. Intermountain has a 17 to 14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Union outscored the Eagles, 23 to 6, in the second quarter, for a 37 to 23 lead at halftime. The score at the end of the third quarter was: Union, 62 and Intermountain, In-termountain, 42. Union put in 28 points in the fourth quarter to win the game in Roosevelt on March 5 by the score of 90 to 67. The top scorer in the game for Union was Kyle Mansfield with 23 points. He put in ten field goals and hit 3 out of 6 free throws. Clay Harrison fired in nine field goals and was 4 for 4 from the foul line for 22 points. Tracy Neilson flipped in ten field goals for 20 points. Also scoring counters for Union were Tracy Dye, 10; Steve Robb, 9; Kary Eldredge, 2; Steve Ferguson, 2 and Ron Gates, 2. Union put in 41 field goals and hit 8 out of 12 free throws. Intermountain put in 31 field goals and hit 5 out of 11 free throws. The top scorers for Intermountain In-termountain were Sisto, 21; Miller, 20 and Hoskie, 19. ' "Kyle Mansfield had the biggest game of his career. He played a real fine game. Clay Harrison and Tracy Neilson also put in 20 points. Union played a real good game," stated Brad Monks. "We will have to be a very patient ball team in our game with Richfield and we will have to take only the good shots. We will go with a ball control offense. We will have to protect against their fast break." Starters for Union in the game against Intermountain were: Clay Harrison, 6'1" forward; Kary Eldredge, 6'2" forward; Kyle Mansfield, Man-sfield, 6'4" center; Tracy Neilson, 6'0". guard and Tracy Dye, 6'2" guard. Brandon Draper, 6'1" guard-forward; Steve Robb, 6'2" forward and Steve Ferguson, 6'4" center, have started a number of games for Union. The scores by quarters in the Grantsville-Lehi game were: Grantsville, Grant-sville, 16 and Lehi, 9, first quarter; Grantsville, 27 and Lehi, 19, second quarter; Grantsville, 35 and Lehi, 32, third quarter; Grantsville, 53 and Lehi, 53, fourth quarter, first overtime and Grantsville, 58 and Lehi, 57, second overtime. Grantsville's top scorers were Didericksen with 23 and Brown with 20. Lehi's high scorer was Bur-ningham Bur-ningham with 28 points |
